After a career that included 30 years as a Shakespearean actor and 17 years as a palliative care social worker, Tom found retirement unexpectedly isolating. At his daughter’s encouragement, he visited GenSpace—and quickly found a place to connect, contribute, and keep growing.

Today, Tom facilitates both Men’s Group and Grief & Loss, drawing on decades of experience listening to people and creating space for meaningful conversation.

“I feel like I’m reinventing myself for a third time,” he shared. “It’s really quite wonderful.”

More than a year after joining, Tom says GenSpace has become an important part of his routine. He especially values seeing members grow comfortable enough to share personal stories, exchange ideas, and build friendships over time.

“I feel like a regular,” he said. “People are always happy to see you.”

His advice to anyone considering GenSpace is simple: “Come. There’s so much to offer.”

Intro to Art gives GenSpace members a chance to try something new each week.

Rotating mediums keeps each class fresh and gives participants the freedom to experiment, discover new favorites, and see where their creativity takes them.

Korean Culture & Conversation gives GenSpace members a chance to explore Korea through the traditions, places, and everyday experiences that shape daily life.

Each class introduces topics like holidays, landmarks, travel, and cuisine while weaving in Korean words and phrases connected to the lesson.

Along the way, members ask questions, share their own experiences, and connect new vocabulary to real-world situations—whether they’re talking about a favorite dish, a holiday tradition, or a place they’d like to visit.

Billiards brings GenSpace members together for a little friendly competition, conversation, and plenty of strategy.

Each game challenges players to line up their shots, think a few moves ahead, and adjust as the table changes. Whether members have been playing for years or are still improving their skills, there’s always something new to practice.

Just as important is the time spent around the table—talking, laughing, and enjoying the game together.

After years as a professional photographer, Toshi found himself spending more time at home. At his wife’s suggestion, he decided to give GenSpace a try.

He quickly became a familiar face in Men’s Group, technology and fitness classes, and Art History, where instructor Joe has invited him to share work from his photography career.

“I like that people appreciate what I’ve done,” Toshi shared. “We exchange ideas.”

Along the way, he’s discovered new technology, worked on his balance, and built friendships across classes. “I never felt like I was alone or like a newcomer,” he said.

Toshi describes GenSpace as giving him “another ten years of youth”—renewing his interest in getting out, meeting people, and trying new things.

His advice? “You’ve got to participate.”

From telehealth visits to health apps, navigating healthcare increasingly means navigating technology.

In Digital Skills for Managing Your Health, GenSpace members practice finding reliable health information, preparing for telehealth appointments, exploring ways to save on medications, using health apps, and protecting their privacy online.

For member Toshi, the practical focus makes a difference. “It’s really helpful because you don’t always pay attention to these things,” he shared. “It gives us tools to know how to navigate and find what we need.”

In Acrylic Painting, every blank canvas is an opportunity to try something new.

GenSpace members experiment with color, technique, and composition while developing paintings in their own individual styles. Along the way, they share ideas, learn from one another, and make plenty of creative decisions that turn each piece into something uniquely their own.

The finished paintings may look very different, but they all begin the same way—with curiosity, experimentation, and a brush in hand.

Sometimes the stories that make us laugh the most are hiding in everyday life.

In Storytelling with Humor, GenSpace members turn personal experiences into stories designed to connect, entertain, and make people laugh. Through exercises and group discussion, they experiment with pacing, vivid details, structure, and comedic timing.

Members can tell their stories aloud or develop them in writing, finding new ways to look back at familiar moments—and maybe find the punchline they missed the first time around.

Strength & Cardio keeps GenSpace members moving with an energetic mix of dance-based cardio and strength exercises.

Set to upbeat music, the class alternates between movement and targeted strength work, giving members plenty of ways to challenge themselves while moving at their own pace.

It’s a workout that brings together music, movement, and a little extra motivation from exercising alongside others.
