The community built among ESC Corps members can be one of the most meaningful parts of a service year experience, and Jubilee Consortium is no exception! The program boasts a broad network of alumni making a difference across the country, many of whom have stayed in relationship since their service year.

Community was central to 2018-2019 Jubilee Year alum Faith's experience: "When I think about my service year I think of it almost like a movie montage of all of the moments spent together. Being new in the city with so many others who were also new to the city made for a fun, packed year of exploration-- hikes, dance parties, beach days, food festivals-- you name it. We also watched each episode of the final season of 'Game of Thrones' together as a house, blankets, snacks and popcorn galore. We celebrated birthdays, attended the LA Pride parade together, each and every holiday, and had countless memorable meals with each other."

Alumni of the 2018-2019 Jubilee Year cohort, which includes current Program Director Junmey Wang, still regularly connect to celebrate holidays and birthdays. Faith says that "[i]t is almost seven years later and I consider the friends that I made during my corps year to be my very best friends, my community, and my family out here in Los Angeles. One year can change your life for the better if you lean into the experience and really get to know the people around you!"

Check out these photos of the 2018-2019 cohort together through the years:

Our final program highlight features ESC's oldest active program, Jubilee Consortium in Los Angeles, California! Having served Los Angeles for 30 years, Jubilee Year is imagining new forms of a service year in 2025. The program is focusing on food justice and local applicants from Los Angeles County for a non-residential fellowship opportunity. If you fit this intersection, applications for the fall are open now!

Fellows will spend their year collaborating with food justice partner agencies, helping to expand their capacity for change-making. Fellows also engage in a rewarding food justice curriculum and leadership development program that emphasizes intentional living, service to the community, professional/personal life balance, and spiritual formation. Together, the Jubilee Year community lives, serves, laughs, plays, laments, celebrates, and supports one another in becoming the change we need to see in the world.

Jubilee Year has had a lasting impact on its alumni. Faith, who served in 2018-2019, says, "The friends I made during my service year are still my chosen family. We celebrate birthdays, graduations, and new jobs, and we grieve together through loss, heartbreak, and the hard moments life throws our way.... I’ve learned how special it is to have people you can count on, even if they were once strangers. That kind of connection comes from doing the scary thing, being vulnerable, having honest conversations, and showing up for each other."

Rest. Restoration. Remembering. Last week, we enjoyed a lovely Fall Retreat together as a Program.

Our Fellows explored what it means to be "intentional" in Community. We also discussed the challenge and beauty of showing up and being seen as our full selves. To top it off, we were blessed to experience and find nourishment in several "Beautiful Places" across Los Angeles.

We're so proud of our Fellows and are excited for this community to deepen and grow!

Day of Learning group pic! In addition to serving at their respective sites this year, our crew will spend every Thursday engaging in hands-on and theoretical learning related to food justice - but also some moments of rest and reflection to integrate all that they’re experiencing.
