What is El Grito?🔔

El Grito de Dolores marks the call for Mexican independence that helped spark the movement for freedom in 1810. Each year, communities across Mexico and around the world come together to honor that history with the traditional cry of “¡Viva México!”

In Los Angeles, El Grito has become more than a ceremony. It is a celebration of culture, history, music, family and the generations of Mexican and Latino communities who have helped shape our city.

This year, we invite Angelenos from every neighborhood to come together at Los Angeles City Hall to celebrate that tradition, honor the past and carry it forward for the next generation.

We want to thank all of our partners that have contributed to this years celebration. It takes an entire community to bring an event likes this to life and we are grateful to those who have partnered with us.

Twenty-five years later, the weight of September 11 remains deeply etched in our collective heart.

Today, we honor the 2,977 lives lost, the extraordinary heroism of our first responders, and the incredible strength of the families who carry this grief every day.

This tragic day changed our nation forever, but it also revealed the power of our unity and resilience. As we reflect today, let us honor their memory by choosing kindness, serving our community, and standing together.
We will always remember.

El Grito may take place at City Hall, but this celebration represents communities from across Los Angeles.

Today we want to thank our City Council colleagues and partner offices who have supported this year’s celebration and helped make El Grito a truly citywide event.

Los Angeles is at its best when we work together.

Different districts. Different neighborhoods. Different communities. One city. One celebration.

That spirit of collaboration has been an important part of building this year’s El Grito, and we are grateful to our colleagues for helping us welcome Angelenos from across the city to celebrate together.

Making a great event look effortless takes a tremendous amount of work.

For months, our production partners have been working alongside our team on staging, audio, lighting, artist coordination, schedules, technical requirements, site logistics and countless details that will all come together on September 15.

Behind the stage our audience sees, are weeks of planning, phone calls, walkthroughs, revisions, advances, diagrams, rehearsals and problem-solving.

Today we want to recognize the production professionals helping us build El Grito 2026.

Thank you for taking our vision and helping turn it into an experience worthy of Los Angeles.

SAFETY & TRAFFIC ADVISORY / UPDATE: ARLETA INCIDENT

Our office is actively monitoring the utility incident that occurred yesterday afternoon, September 8, near the 14000 block of W. Van Nuys Blvd. in Arleta. Guided by our commitment to public safety, infrastructure reliability, and transparent community communication, we are sharing the following update based on reports from city departments and utility partners:
Scene Status: The Los Angeles Fire Department confirms the situation is static and contained to the immediate construction site, with no ongoing hazard to the surrounding neighborhood.
Incident Details & Testing: SoCalGas reports that crews responded at approximately 3:52 p.m. following an incident involving a third-party contractor welding steel plates over a trench for a city sewer project. Initial testing conducted inside the excavation area did not detect any natural gas readings.
Infrastructure Protocols: As part of standard safety protocols, crews conducted a routine survey of infrastructure 150 feet in each direction. While doing so, they reconfirmed a known minor leak on a service line located 45 to 50 feet away from a prior assessment. Out of an abundance of caution, crews have isolated that specific line and fully replaced the service segment to ensure continued reliability.
Traffic Advisory: Motorists should continue to expect delays in the immediate area and are advised to use alternate routes while remaining field work is completed.
Four individuals were transported for medical evaluation. Residents experiencing any service disruptions or suspecting a natural gas leak should contact SoCalGas directly at 1-800-427-2200.
We extend our sincere appreciation to our first responders and field crews for their rapid and coordinated response. Our thoughts are with those injured for a swift and complete recovery.

LA is heating up! High temperatures between 92°F and 108°F are expected across parts of Los Angeles County from today, Wednesday, Sept 9 through Thursday, Sept 10.

⚠️ ATTN: CITY EMPLOYEES & OUTDOOR WORKERS
Please take extra precautions to protect against heat-related illnesses:
💧 Hydrate: Drink water frequently (at least 1 quart per hour).
🌳 Rest: Take regular breaks in shaded or cool-down areas.
🧠 Be Aware: Know the signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke.
📋 Supervisors: Ensure your teams have mandatory access to water, shade, and adequate rest breaks in accordance with CA Heat Illness Prevention Standards.
