I’ve known Laura Biewer for 20 years, and if there’s one thing I can say with absolute confidence, it’s this: nobody understands the notary profession, especially the healthcare side of it, like Laura does.
With The Compassionate Notary, Laura has written the book our profession has needed for a long time. This isn’t just a how-to manual or a checklist of rules. It’s a thoughtful, grounded, and deeply human guide for notaries who find themselves working with signers at some of the most vulnerable moments of their lives.
What makes this book so powerful is that it reads exactly like Laura teaches and practices. Calm, clear, ethical, and compassionate. She doesn’t sugarcoat the realities of healthcare notarizations. Patients may be scared, in pain, medicated, or surrounded by family members who are emotional and overwhelmed. Laura addresses these situations head on, offering practical guidance while never losing sight of the notary’s legal responsibilities and boundaries.
As someone who has spent decades educating notaries, answering thousands of hotline questions, and watching notaries struggle with these exact scenarios, I appreciate how Laura balances compliance with compassion. She reminds us that empathy is not a liability. It is a skill. And when used correctly, it strengthens both the signer experience and the integrity of the notarization.
This second book feels like a natural evolution of Laura’s life’s work. It reflects not only her technical expertise, but also her respect for the people we serve. She reinforces something I’ve always believed: being a great notary isn’t just about knowing the law. It’s about knowing how to show up when it matters most.
If you work in hospitals, care facilities, hospice settings, or with aging or medically fragile clients, this book should be on your desk. And if you don’t yet but might one day, read it anyway. You’ll be better prepared, more confident, and more grounded in your role because of it.
I’m incredibly proud of Laura and grateful she continues to raise the bar for our profession. The Compassionate Notary isn’t just a book. It’s a reminder of why this work matters.
