Joanne Marie Ahladotis, 27 years old, North Tower 104th floor

Joanne Marie Ahladotis was born on June 10, 1974 to Milton and Helen Ahladotis in Rocky Point, NY, where she also grew up. She lived in Forest Hills, NY, in adulthood. She had a sister, Effie. Joanne attended and graduated from Rocky Point High School and Stony Brook University with a Bachelorโ€™s degree in Computer Science. Joanne had loved computers from a young age and had always been talented with them. When she was in kindergarten, and schools were only just beginning to introduce computers, Joanne had been hand-picked to be in the program to use them. She continued this love into her schooling, majoring in Computer Science, and her career, with her work for Cantor Fitzgerald/eSpeed.

Joanne also loved parties. Every year, she made a tradition of hosting a Halloween party at her apartment, and she was constantly going out with friends. She was frequently bought presents for her friends and family wherever she went, especially when she traveled to Greece every two years to visit her grandmother. Joanne was fluent in the Greek language and always returned from the trips with gifts of jewelry, books, icons and cookies. She took pride in her appearance, always dressing well and having her nails done once a week, and her apartment, often having guests over and keeping it decorated, especially for Christmas, when her sister, Effie, recalled the decorations being โ€œlike Macyโ€™s windowsโ€. Joanne was voted as โ€œBest Smileโ€ in her senior year of high school at Rocky Brook. The week prior to September 11th, Joanne had traveled to Las Vegas for business, and invited her parents along with her. Her mother recalled the trip as โ€œthe most beautiful week of her life.โ€

Joanne worked as a systems analyst for Cantor Fitzgeraldโ€™s subsidiary, eSpeed, on the 104th floor of the World Trade Centerโ€™s North Tower.

"If I don't make it, please call my family and let them know how much I love them."โ
โ
Todd Beamer was just 32 years old when his flight was hijacked by terrorists on 9/11. A passenger on United Airlines Flight 93, Beamer was forced to think quickly. He first tried calling AT&T, but both of his calls were terminated upon connection. Beamer then attempted to call his wife, but that call was also terminated.โ
โ
Finally, he contacted Airfone operators and was able to connect with a supervisor named Lisa Jefferson. While on the line, he pleaded with Jefferson to tell his pregnant wife and two sons that he loved them, but he also outlined a heroic plan to fight back against the hijackers alongside his fellow passengers and the flight crew. And that's exactly what he did. Visit the link in our profile to go inside the courageous final moments of Todd Beamer, the hero of Flight 93.โ

For those getting off shift on the morning of September 11th, 2001, it had been a fairly normal night for Ladder Co. 3 of the New York City Fire Department. At 8:46 a.m., this normalcy shattered abruptly when American Airlines Flight 11, the first of two hijacked jetliners, slammed into the World Trade Center, plunging the city into confusion, disbelief and fear. Within minutes of the fiery crash, hundreds of firefighters across New York had sprung into action, including the men of Ladder 3 of Manhattan's East Village.
The members of Ladder 3 were "riding heavy" that morning. As the first tower had been hit during a shift change, some of the off-duty firefighters stayed on, riding with the rig to the disaster. Captain Patrick Brown, 48, and Lieutenant Kevin Donnelly, 43, were commanding the team of firefighters from Ladder 3, who were part of the first flood of firefighters, paramedics and police officers to arrive at the World Trade Center.
The difficulty of the task ahead of them did not slow down the firefighters of Ladder 11, who were ordered to head up into the North Tower to find and evacuate any injured victims. Laden with 100 pounds of protective gear and clothing, the men quickly began to climb up the stairwell towards the impact zone. As the firefighters moved upwards, thousands of terrified people flooded past them. At 9:21 a.m., Captain Brown reported over his radio that his men were one third of the way up the tower.
Ladder 3's rescue mission came to a tragic end when the North Tower buckled and collapsed at 10:28 a.m., instantly killing all 11 men. They had not heard the evacuation order radioed to them after the South Tower's collapse due to communication problems. Their fire truck, which was parked on West Street, was damaged beyond repair after being struck by debris from the collapsing buildings.
During the recovery effort, the battered fire truck was removed from Ground Zero and stored inside a hanger at John F. Kennedy International Airport until 2011, when it was put on display at the 9/11 Memorial Museum to honor and remember the sacrifice made by the 343 firefighters who gave their lives that unforgettable morning.

John Ogonowski, 50, wore two uniforms: his navy senior captain's uniform for American Airlines and the blue jeans and denim shirt he wore while working on his 150-acre farm in Dracut, Massachusetts, where he lived with his wife and three daughters.
Twelve days a month, John flew transcontinental flights. On off days, he tended the farm's peach orchard, with acres set aside for corn, pumpkins and hay. After supper he often sat in his favorite chair, reading agricultural journals late into the evening.
John joined the United States Air Force at the height of the Vietnam War. He flew C-141 transport planes, taking equipment to Asia, and sometimes flying back to the States carrying the bodies of American soldiers. He became a commercial pilot in 1979, and met a pretty flight attendant named Peggy, whom he later married.
John was an active member of the American Veterans Association, the American Legion, the Merrimack Valley Vietnam Veterans, and the Dracut Historical Society. He belonged to the board of directors for the Massachusetts Farm Bureau, and the board of directors for the Dracut Land Trust.
Early on September 11th, 2001, John left his wife at home, still in bed. It was already dawn as he turned down the road in his dusty green Chevy truck to start his drive to Logan International Airport in Boston.
Later that morning, John was piloting American Airlines Flight 11 when hijackers launched a brutal attack to take control of the aircraft. He had the presence of mind to activate a "push-to-talk" button intermittently so that the authorities on the ground could hear the horrific events unfolding onboard the aircraft.
Air traffic controllers listened from a concrete bunker in New Hampshire as John was told, "Don't do anything foolish. You're not going to get killed." But even as this was happening, John and his co-pilot, Thomas McGuinness, knew that flight attendants were being attacked with knives in the business class cabin. They both desperately fought back against the terrorists until they were overwhelmed, allowing the hijackers to set the aircraft on a course of carnage towards the World Trade Center.

In a massive coordinated terrorist attack 19 men hijacked 4 jetliners on the morning of September 11. The hijackers were on a su***de mission and had received orders to take over control of the plane and to fly them into specified targets. Flight 175 departed Boston at 08:14. The plane was hijacked by 5 terrorists. The hijackers took over control, reportedly switched off the transponder and changed course to New York. At 09:03 the plane was flown into the Southeast side of the 110-story New York World Trade Center South tower in a sharp left wing low attitude, crashed and exploded into the 78th through 84th floors.

According to an FAA study, N612UA struck the WTC at a speed of 586 mph; an MIT study however determined the plane was probably traveling at 537 mph. The massive fire weakened the tower structure on these floors and the tower collapsed at 09:59. Most of the office workers below the 78th floor were able to evacuate the tower on time before the collapse. 17 minutes before Flight 175 crashed into the South Tower, the WTC North Tower had been hit by American Airlines Flight 11, a Boeing 767-200ER (Reg. N334AA). It has been estimated that about 1600 people were killed on the North Tower, and about 900 on the South Tower.

On September 11th, 2001, at 8:45 a.m. on a clear Tuesday morning, an American Airlines Boeing 767 loaded with 20,000 gallons of jet fuel crashed into the north tower of the World Trade Center in New York City. The impact left a gaping, burning hole near the 80th floor of the 110-story skyscraper, instantly killing hundreds of people and trapping hundreds more on higher floors.
As the evacuation of the tower and its twin got underway, television cameras broadcasted live images of what initially appeared to be a freak accident.
Then, 18 minutes after the first plane hit, a second Boeing 767โ€“United Airlines Flight 175โ€“appeared out of the sky, turned sharply toward the World Trade Center, and sliced into the south tower at about the 60th floor. The collision caused a massive explosion that showered burning debris over surrounding buildings and the streets below. America was under attack.
