Get ready to race, roll, and get creative! Los Alamos County Recreation Division is hosting its second year of the Bathtub Gravity Race, a free, soapbox-style gravity race taking place Saturday, October 10, 2026, from 10am-12pm.

Participants will race homemade, bathtub-inspired carts downhill along Central Avenue and Canyon Road, with the race finishing at the Aquatic Center parking lot. The event will feature a double-elimination competition with four age divisions:
💠Ages 3-6
💠Ages 7-11
💠Ages 12-15
💠Ages 16 and up

The event is designed to bring creativity, competition, and community fun together in a one-of-a-kind race down the streets of Los Alamos.

For younger racers, children under 15 must have a parent present, and parents of children under 6 are encouraged to be as hands-on as necessary. All contestants must sign a liability waiver to participate.

To participate in the gravity race, carts must meet the following requirements:
🦆Carts must have a minimum of three wheels.
🦆Brakes must be sufficient to hold and stop the cart.
🦆No propulsion devices other than gravity are permitted.
🦆Carts may not have sharp edges or points.
🦆Drivers must wear a helmet while racing.
🦆Drivers may not use their feet or hands to propel or push the cart.

For those who want to take the bathtub racing experience to the next level, the event will also feature a push race.

Push race requirements include:
🏁Both the driver and rider must be 14 years of age or older.
🏁Bathtubs/cart must have functional brakes and steering.
🏁No more than one person may push the tub/cart.
🏁Pushers must wear closed-toe shoes.
🏁The bathtub/cart must always remain under the control of the pusher and may not be released until it has come to a complete stop.
🏁Drivers must wear a helmet while racing.

Participants can also show off their creativity, with an award for the best-themed bathtub/cart.

Registration is required and is available online. Participants who are new to gravity or push racing can find examples and additional resources at: https://loom.ly/1jCDnpc to get an idea of what to expect.

The race begins at 10am, with the course traveling downhill along Central Avenue and Canyon Road before finishing at the Aquatic Center parking lot.
