Today, we climbed Pajarito Mountain together to honor the 343 firefighters, 72 law enforcement officers, and all those who lost their lives on September 11, 2001.

Presented by the LAFD Honor Guard, today’s Memorial Climb brought together members of the LAFD, Los Alamos County Police Department, and our community to remember those who made the ultimate sacrifice—and the families, friends, and brothers and sisters who carried their legacy forward.

We remember. We honor. We will never forget.

Today marks 25 years since the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001.

We pause to honor and remember every life lost and every family forever changed. We recognize the extraordinary courage and sacrifice of the firefighters, law enforcement officers, emergency medical personnel, and countless others who answered the call and gave their lives in service to others.

Their bravery and selflessness remain a guiding light for all of us in the fire service. May we never forget the unity and resilience shown on that day and in the days that followed.

We remember. We honor. We will never forget.

🚒 Celebrating the Retirements of Firefighters Daniel McBride and Robert Ortega 🚒

After 21½ years of service for Daniel and 20 years for Robert, Firefighters McBride and Ortega are retiring from the Los Alamos Fire Department.

Daniel served as an EMT-Intermediate and member of the Technical Rescue Team. Known for his compassionate patient care, positive attitude, and unforgettable sense of humor, he was a valued member of every crew—and a true character both at the firehouse and on the theatrical stage.

Robert also served as an EMT-Intermediate and was known for his professionalism, perseverance, and willingness to help wherever needed. Outside the firehouse, he is a devoted father, grandfather, and accomplished New Mexico hunting guide.

Daniel and Robert, thank you for your service, friendship, and lasting contributions to LAFD. We wish you and your families happiness, good health, and long, well-deserved retirements! 🎉

UPDATE: Fires are contained and controlled. Smoke may still be visible from Los Alamos but currently pose no threat to the community.

In the early afternoon of Tuesday, August 18, the Los Alamos Fire Department made the initial response to the lighting-strike fires on Pajarito Mountain. The fires were then turned over to Santa Fe National Forest, Espanola District. The fires were contained, controlled and will continue to be monitored. The lightning strike fire in Bandelier National Monument was likewise dealt with by the National Park Service.

We are aware of the fires caused by lighting strikes on Pajarito Mountain. Please do not call 9-1-1 to report this smoke/fire.

The Los Alamos Fire Department has responded to three lightning-strike fires on Pajarito Mountain and are working to extinguish them. Meanwhile, National Park Service has responded to a lightning-strike fire in Bandelier. There is no threat to the community from any of them.

Please join us in congratulating Luke Washburn on his promotion to LANL Training Division Chief!

Chief Washburn has proudly served with the Los Alamos Fire Department for 17 years, advancing through the ranks and demonstrating a strong commitment to leadership and public service. Throughout his career, he has served as a paramedic and as a member of the HazMat Specialty Team.

We are excited to see Chief Washburn begin this next chapter of his career and look forward to the knowledge, experience, and leadership he will bring to the LANL Training Division.

LAFD is proud to be recognized for our participation in Preventative Health Screening!

For the second consecutive year, LAFD has provided comprehensive cancer screenings for our employees. These screenings have demonstrated the importance of early detection by identifying potential health concerns and allowing employees to seek timely follow-up care and treatment.

Cancer remains one of the most serious occupational threats facing the fire service, and early detection can save lives. Through regular screenings, education, and prevention efforts, LAFD is committed to protecting the health of those who dedicate their careers to protecting others.
