After Hours, Urgent, Animal Control - Mayor Kimberly Travnichek (785) 531-2286 (Text Message Preferred) Welcome to Lorraine, a "little Town on the Prairie" - and "The Little City That Could"! The story of these Kansas prairie towns, while sharing many characteristics, is also each unique unto itself. One such, located virtually in the geographic center of

the state, is Lorraine, Kansas, founded in 1888 in southern Ellsworth county at an elevation of 1781 feet above sea level, currently with a population (according to the 2010 census) of 138. Qualities of life no longer accessible in this country’s cities and suburbs remain as they sprang from the land which bred them. The South Wind is sent to sweep them, and the prairie below, clean, and to remain as a constant companion. Storms may be violent or beautiful, or both, and their courses observed over the hours. Nights are alight with stars and moon not obscured in the eternal daylight of a city. Sunrise and sunset are brilliantly colored, and appreciated by their witnesses. Points of the compass are given, and utilized, in directions. Humor and storytelling, tales tall and some true, are ingrained in the preservation of the culture. Neighbors not only recognize one another but have time for a natural involvement in their lives in addition to the capacity to “live and let live”. Interaction tends to be straightforward and unpretentious. People wave and smile as they pass on foot or in vehicles. It’s still possible to walk the streets in casual safety.

General information

Lorraine, Kansas was founded in 1887 by H. L. Hill, an official connected with the Kansas Midland Railway, which extended its line through Ellsworth County in 1886 - 1887. The town was named after Lorraine Stanley, the daughter of another of the railroad officials, Mr. W. E. Stanley of the Midland Town Company. Lots were sold, and H. B. Mohlman erected the first building on the site now occupied by the Lorraine State Bank. The town was incorporated as the City of Lorraine on May 8, 1923 as a city of the third class under the laws of the state of Kansas by order of the Board of County Commissioners of Ellsworth County, Kansas. Commissioners: Chester A. Chapman, John Pfeiffer, and M. L. Bailey; attested by Ellsworth County Clerk A.M. Woodmansee. An election of city officers was held on June 5, 1923. The elected officers were sworn in at the first city council meeting on June 13, 1923: Mayor - William Schmidt; Councilmen - Paul Peters, Henry Becker, Joseph Petrzelka, George Heitman, and John H. Janssen; and Police Judge - F. William Melchert. Paul Peters was appointed temporary clerk to record the minutes of the first meeting. The meeting was adjourned to June 19, 1923. When the meeting reconvened on that date, the following city officials were appointed and confirmed: City Clerk - Edward B. Staeber; Treasurer - William T. Heitschmidt; and City Marshall - Albert Petrzelka.
