Gregory Vernon Carpenter, 67, of Lore City, passed away Thursday (June 4, 2026) at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center, Columbus, surrounded by his family.

He was born September 28, 1958 in Barnesville, son of the late Vernon Carpenter and Letha (Kahrig) Carpenter Shipe.

A 1977 graduate of Meadowbrook High School, Greg continued his education at Zane State, earning a degree in welding. He began his career at LDM, where he dedicated thirty years of service until the company’s closing and then later retired from Champion Spark Plug.

Greg proudly served with the Lore City Volunteer Fire Department. He loved spending time outdoors, especially riding his side by side and his Harley Davidson. Poker Runs were a favorite pastime, and he cherished the hours he spent helping on the Burga family farm. He was also a proud member of the Taylor Motorsports Pulling Team.

A devoted fan of the Pittsburgh Steelers and The Ohio State Buckeyes, Greg enjoyed woodworking and listening to country music in his spare time, especially his favorite group, Alabama.

Above all, Greg’s greatest joy was his family. His love for them—especially his grandchildren—was evident in everything he did. They were his pride and his world.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a grandson, Ryker Allen Oliver.

Greg leaves behind to cherish his memory his wife, Sandra Sherrard; his children: Christina (Eric) VanSickle, Keith (Courtney) Carpenter, and his stepson, Daniel (Kayla) Sherrard; his grandchildren: Ethan Carpenter, Hayden Kahrig, Austin Kahrig, Madison Carpenter, MaKenna Watson, Kyle VanSickle, Layla Sherrard, Collin VanSickle, Karsen Sherrard, and Brooks Carpenter; his great-grandchild, Leo Kahrig; and his cats, whom he adored.

Visitation will be held Wednesday (June 10, 2026) from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Black-Epperson Funeral Home, Byesville, where funeral services will follow at 8 p.m. The family encourages everyone to wear their Ohio State apparel and bring their side-by-side and/or buggies to Greg’s services.

Personal condolences may be shared with the family by visiting www.black-eppersonfuneralhomes.com

From the Fire Department:
Upgrade to Lore City. For past several months we have been working with the County to get the Outside Warning Siren at the Fire Station to be Activated for Severe Weather from Dispatch at the Sheriff’s Office. On Wed. 6th @ 12:00 Noon our First Test will happen. The Siren will activate for approx. 2 minutes. This may cause some aggravation for those living next door & close by but it is what it is.
The purpose is to Warn Residents of Severe Weather & to take appropriate action. 1st Wednesday of month, all Warnings in County will activate for Test. In event of possible severe weather, Test will not occur. As we progress in this venture, public awareness/training meetings will be held with the cooperation of the National Weather Service. We are also working on plan to provide a Weather Radio for Households. Now keep in mind: You may or may not hear this Warning when in your house. These are “referred to as Outside Warning Sirens. We will see how it goes next Wednesday @ Noon. Let us know your thoughts. We are Trying.
