🎄 Update About Our Christmas Parade 🎄

We’ve made the difficult decision to cancel this year’s Horse-Drawn Christmas Parade.

The Equine Herpesvirus (EHV-1) outbreak has now been confirmed in at least 8 states, including several cases relatively close to our area. While we love to see our beautiful teams and riders bringing holiday cheer through town every year, the health and safety of every horse involved—yours and ours—has to come first.

This isn’t about fear-mongering. It’s about being responsible horse owners and stewards.
Right now we have no practical way to verify vaccination status, recent show/exposure history, or health records for every horse that would participate. Bringing large numbers of horses together from different farms and regions creates risk of spreading this highly contagious neurologic virus, even among horses that appear perfectly healthy from one event to another.

We cannot justify putting your horses, our horses, or the equine community at risk for the sake of one event, no matter how beloved the tradition. We know this is disappointing (believe us, we feel it too), but we hope you’ll understand and support this decision in protecting the horses we love.

A few notes:
🎅🏽 Loranger Fire Department will still have their parade as scheduled.
🎄 As of last night 12/1/2025, Folsom will still be hosting their horse parade December 13th. Please follow them on Facebook for any updates.

Thank you for your understanding, and from our farm to yours, we wish you a safe and healthy Merry Christmas. ❤️
The Brunett Family

P.S.
We’re looking forward to Mardi Gras 2026 and the virus to leave as quickly as it appeared! So, would there be any interest for a Horse-Drawn Mardi Gras Parade? Please let us know and we can start planning. 💜💚💛

Check out the article published by The Advocate from the 50th Old Farmers Day. Special thanks to Richard Meek for highlighting what is so special about our event, and y’all be sure to take note where our friend Brian Lee is quoted.

It is with heavy hearts that we share the passing of Brian Lee, a cherished member of our Old Farmer’s Day family and one of our longest-serving staffers, who passed away on November 11, 2025.

For more than 40 years, Brian and his family were at the very heart of Old Farmer’s Day, faithfully carrying on a proud, generations-old tradition of grinding cornmeal. In the late 1970s, Brian’s father, Dwight Lee, moved the family’s gristmill from their home in Uneedus to its new home here at Old Farmer’s Day, where it has stood ever since. Through the decades, the familiar hum of that mill became a main stopping point for visitors of our event.

When Dwight passed in 2007, Brian stepped up to continue what his family had begun, ensuring that each year, visitors could experience a living piece of history. Watching Brian at work was something special. He would stand back and quietly watch the meal bin as it collected the ground up corn, carefully adjusting the damsel until the desired consistency of cornmeal shook out below.

Anyone who knew Brian knows he wasn’t very fond of being in front of the camera...in fact, we had to twist his arm to get him in our group photo this year! However, we are so grateful to have found this treasured photograph of him. Taken by a visitor to Old Farmer's Day several years back, it captures Brian perfectly: that rugged, serious expression that so many remember, paired with the gentle heart and kind spirit that those close to him knew so well.

Beneath that gruff exterior was one of the kindest souls you could ever meet - a true gentle giant. Brian deeply cared for his fellow man, always hosting events at his farm to benefit those in need. For many years, Brian would host a benefit tailride at his home, and the proceeds raised would go to a family or person most in need.

Our hearts go out to the Lee family and friends during this time. We plan to honor his memory at next year’s Old Farmer’s Day, as the wheel keeps turning and the tradition continues, just as Brian would have wanted.

The family has announced his funeral arrangements to be Monday November 17, 2025, at Harry McKneely Funeral Home in Hammond. His full obituary can be found here: https://obits.harrymckneely.com/brian-lee

And that's a wrap for the 50th edition of Old Farmer's Day!

When we tell you we could never do this without the help and support of the folks in this picture, we genuinely mean that.

In 1973, Old Farmer's Day began on the concept that different families from all walks of life could come together and enjoy life's pleasures as one. No relation, just a group of friends who love and support each other no matter what.

Well, we are proud to say that tradition has shone through to now.

THIS is our family.

So from us to ya'll......thanks for 50 years, and we hope to keep this going for 50 more!

(More pics to come in the following day!)

Much love to all,
The Brunett Family
