Over the course of recent patrol shifts the Washington Township Police Officers conducted several motor vehicle stops which resulted in arrests and criminal charges.

• An officer observed a vehicle traveling on Schooleys Mountain Road with an equipment violation and a license plate that did not match the vehicle. During the investigation, the driver, an adult male, was found to have an active NCIC warrant from Pennsylvania. The individual was taken into custody and transported to the Morris County Correctional Facility pending extradition proceedings. The driver was also issued multiple motor vehicle summonses and is scheduled to appear in Washington Township Municipal Court.

• An officer conducted a motor vehicle stop on East Avenue after observing a moving violation. During the investigation, the driver, an adult female, was determined to be operating the vehicle while under the influence of alcohol. The individual was placed under arrest, charged with multiple motor vehicle offenses, and released to a responsible party pending a court appearance in Washington Township Municipal Court.

• An officer observed a vehicle commit a moving violation on Schooleys Mountain Road. During the ensuing investigation, the driver, an adult female, was determined to be operating the vehicle while under the influence of alcohol. The individual was arrested, charged with multiple motor vehicle offenses, and released to a responsible party pending a court appearance in Washington Township Municipal Court.

• An officer observed a disabled vehicle on Schooleys Mountain Road and determined it had been reported stolen from Easton, Pennsylvania. During the investigation, the driver, an adult male, was determined to be operating the vehicle while under the influence of alcohol and was taken into custody. The individual was charged with multiple motor vehicle offenses as well as a criminal complaint for receiving stolen property. The individual was transported to the Morris County Correctional Facility pending his first court appearance and extradition proceedings to Pennsylvania related to an active NCIC warrant.

As we approach the Fourth of July holiday (and always), the Washington Township Police Department reminds everyone to celebrate responsibly and make good decisions. Impaired driving continues to put lives at risk and can have serious consequences for drivers, passengers, and other motorists on our roadways.

If your plans include alcohol, please plan ahead. Designate a sober driver, use a rideshare service, call a friend or family member, or stay where you are until you can get home safely.

Help keep our roads safe this holiday weekend. One good decision can save a life. Please don't drink and drive.

As the July 4th holiday approaches, residents are reminded to use fireworks cautiously and in full compliance with New Jersey law. State regulations permit only limited “consumer novelty items,” including sparklers, fountains, smoke devices, and similar ground-based effects purchased in NJ. All aerial fireworks such as firecrackers, bottle rockets, and Roman candles remain prohibited under New Jersey law (N.J.S.A. 21:3-1 and related provisions). It is also important to understand that fireworks legally purchased in another state do not become legal once brought into New Jersey. Possession or use of prohibited fireworks may be charged as a disorderly persons offense and can carry fines and other penalties.

Residents should always follow manufacturer instructions, maintain a safe distance from structures and flammable materials, and ensure children are closely supervised by adults at all times. Extra consideration should be given to neighbors, veterans, and pets who may be affected by noise and flash effects.
