On Friday, May 22, 2026, some of our Aviation High School Juniors and Seniors took an incredible field trip to the ConEdison East River Generating Station in Manhattan. Our students got a firsthand look at how aviation powerplant technology is utilized for vital infrastructure outside the world of flight!

During the tour, our students witnessed massive General Electric (GE) turbine engines in action. While these gas turbines are structurally identical to the jet engines found on commercial aircraft, they are used here as "aeroderivative" turbines. Instead of creating thrust to propel an airplane, they spin high-capacity generators to produce electricity and steam, powering Manhattan south of 36th Street and driving more than half of New York City's massive steam system!

Our students also had the valuable opportunity to speak with ConEdison representatives about the diverse career paths available within the utility sector. It was an eye-opening experience showing our future A&P technicians just how versatile and highly demanded their powerplant skill set is across multiple industries. Thank you, ConEdison, for hosting our students and inspiring our future technicians!

Global opportunities are calling!

On Friday, May 29, 2026, Aviation High School welcomed two representatives from StandardAero's Texas facility, including one proud AHS alumnus! They spent the day speaking with our students about the incredible career paths available to our graduates around the world.

What is StandardAero? They are one of the world's largest independent aviation service providers, specializing in Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul (MRO). An MRO is an essential part of the aerospace industry where aircraft, engines, and components undergo deep-level maintenance, complex repairs, and complete overhauls to keep commercial, military, and business fleets flying safely.

With facilities spanning the globe, StandardAero offers our future Airframe and Powerplant (A&P) technicians an incredible launchpad for a global career. A huge thank you to the StandardAero team for investing in our students, and a special welcome home to our alumnus for inspiring the next generation of Flyers!

Happy Aviation Maintenance Technician Day!

Today, May 24, 2026, we celebrate the incredible professionals who keep the world flying safely. Here at Aviation High School, aviation maintenance is in our DNA. We are proud to have nearly 50 FAA-certified Airframe and Powerplant (A&P) licensed technicians on our current staff, alongside a proud 90-year history with too many A&P alumni to count!

Our legacy of excellence runs deep, many of our graduates and faculty have earned the prestigious FAA Charles Taylor Master Mechanic Award and we have two entire honor boards in our school dedicated to displaying their names. This award is named after Charles Taylor, the first aviation maintenance technician who worked alongside Orville and Wilbur Wright as they built their Wright Flyer using his handcrafted engine. Do you know of alumni or former staff who have received their Charles Taylor Award, but they are not listed on our honoree board? Contact us at [email protected] with the pertinent information.

A massive THANK YOU to all aviation maintenance technicians, our great AMT staff, and our incredible alumni across the industry for your precision, dedication, and expertise.

Students & Parents: Let’s show our appreciation! Take a moment to email your favorite "shop" teacher today to express your gratitude for everything they teach our Flyers.
