If you're driving down Avenel Boulevard, look for the recently installed rain garden between Lenna Conrow and JMF elementary schools. The garden was planted on Friday, October 10. Organized by the Green Team, the effort came together with the Long Branch Environmental Commission which provided funding, Long Branch School District which provided the site and did all the site preparation work, and the Friends of Jackson Woods who, together with a volunteer group organized by Earthshare NJ, designed, planted and mulched the garden. City DPW helped deliver supplies and water the new plantings. The elementary students later added painted rocks for a finishing touch. The garden contains over 80 plants that will help filter runoff from hard surfaces around the schools and clean the water flowing into the stream that flows into the park, a part of the Manahasset Creek watershed.

In late September 2024, Dr. Chris Obropta of Rutgers Cooperative Extension Water Resources Program presented an educational workshop on the value of rain gardens. It ended by asking if people wanted a rain garden to be designed by Rutgers graduate landscape architects for free. Six people signed up and received a free rain garden design.

Later in the fall, several Green Team and Environmental Commission members and Rutgers-certified Green Infrastructure Champions helped one of these Long Branch residents build her rain garden. She continued to work on it this spring and shared these beautiful photos.

Here is the testimonial from this resident:
"Not “done” yet but just wanted to give you a quick update…. Even with all this rain, no water in my basement. The back garage seems to be much dryer as well. I had magnolia blooms but now the Black Eyed Susans are bloomin'"

If you would like a rain garden designed for your home, let us know!

Thanks to everyone who came out to our Arbor Day event. Lots of support for our campaign for refillable bottle stations! Special thanks to local naturalist Gerry Lingner for teaching us all about trees and artists Dorsey & Rich Lucas for showcasing Jackson Woods' eclectic artistic elements. Also thanks to Beach Grille and Doggie Sweets -- two of Long Branch's Certified Green Businesses for supplying wonderful treats for both people and pups. We are excited to report we gave away all of our 150 baby trees...one way to restore the tree canopy here in Long Branch. Happy Planting Everyone!
