America was launched at Newport News in 1939 as the largest liner ever built in the United States. With modern interiors and a streamlined profile, she entered service in 1940 but was soon requisitioned for war. Converted in record time into USS West Point, she carried more than 450,000 troops across the world, surviving bombs, torpedoes, and storms. After the war she returned to civilian service and finally took her place on the North Atlantic, becoming the pride of United States Lines until overshadowed by the larger and faster United States in 1952.

By the mid-1960s she was sold to Chandris Lines and transformed into Australis, carrying thousands of migrants to Australia and completing dozens of world cruises. Later years saw her pass through multiple owners and names, including Italis, Noga, and Alferdoss, as plans for cruising or hotel conversion repeatedly failed. In 1994, under tow as American Star, she broke free in a storm and grounded off Fuerteventura in the Canary Islands. Waves split her in two, the stern sank, and the bow slowly collapsed into the sea, leaving only fragments of a once-famous liner.
