This week’s video takes us to the National Motor Lifeboat School at the mouth of the Columbia River, where Coast Guard boat operators train to become Surfmen.

Operating in heavy surf requires more than boat-handling skills. Crews must learn to read the ocean, make split-second decisions, and know when to push forward or avoid a dangerous wave altogether.

The Coast Guard’s 47-foot motor lifeboat is built for extreme conditions, but the judgment and experience of the Surfman behind the helm make the mission possible.

⚓ Training Tuesday: Reporting Aboard a Cutter

Auxiliarists should remember the basic military customs and courtesies when boarding or departing a U.S. Coast Guard cutter.

🫡 When Boarding
• Stop at the top of the gangway, face the National Ensign, and salute.
• Turn to the Officer of the Deck (OOD), salute, and request permission to come aboard.
• Hold your salute until it is returned.

⚓ When Departing
• Face the OOD, salute, and request permission to leave the ship.
• Once permission is granted, turn toward the National Ensign and render a final salute.

These traditions reflect respect for the National Ensign, the vessel, and the proud customs of the U.S. Coast Guard.

This week’s video takes us inside the Advanced Helicopter Rescue School in Astoria, Oregon, where experienced Coast Guard pilots, flight mechanics, and rescue swimmers train together for some of the most demanding search-and-rescue missions.

From heavy surf and cliff rescues to caves, forests, and urban environments, these crews train for the unpredictable conditions they may face when lives are on the line.

The goal is simple: build skill, coordination, and trust before the real rescue begins.

🎥⚓ Watch-It Wednesday: #9 – Force From Above: How HITRON Changed Maritime Drug Interdiction

This week’s video highlights HITRON, one of the Coast Guard’s most specialized aviation units, and its role in stopping high-speed drug-smuggling vessels at sea.

In August 2025, a HITRON detachment reached its 1,000th interdiction, helping stop a suspected smuggling vessel in the Eastern Pacific and seize more than 3,600 pounds of co***ne.

From the air to the sea, this mission shows the precision, coordination, and capabilities behind maritime law enforcement.

When winter freezes the Great Lakes, the mission doesn’t stop.

Coast Guard icebreakers work through some of the toughest winter conditions in the country to keep critical shipping routes open and commerce moving. From iron ore and grain to road salt and petroleum products, these waterways support industries and communities across the nation.

🏍️ Throwback Thursday: A Rare Piece of Coast Guard History

This week’s Throwback Thursday features a beautifully restored 1945 Indian Chief motorcycle with a unique connection to the U.S. Coast Guard.

These photos were taken during the Fourth of July celebration at Riverside Municipal Airport, where this stunning motorcycle captured First Place for its exceptional restoration and presentation.

According to its owner, this Coast Guard-themed Indian Chief traveled from Riverside, California, to Washington, D.C., in 2012 to participate in the Rolling Thunder Parade, joining thousands of riders in honoring our nation’s veterans and those who have served.

The U.S. Coast Guard’s legacy extends far beyond the water. Preserving historic artifacts like this motorcycle helps keep the stories, traditions, and spirit of service alive for future generations.
