This week’s video takes us to the National Motor Lifeboat School at the mouth of the Columbia River, where Coast Guard boat operators train to become Surfmen.
Operating in heavy surf requires more than boat-handling skills. Crews must learn to read the ocean, make split-second decisions, and know when to push forward or avoid a dangerous wave altogether.
The Coast Guard’s 47-foot motor lifeboat is built for extreme conditions, but the judgment and experience of the Surfman behind the helm make the mission possible.
