Grief comes in many shapes and sizes. Most often it’s after the death of a loved one we have a personal relationship with. However, some grief is handed down generationally. Hearing ancestral stories of loss and regret passed down with care and reverence.

As is the case with one of our volunteers. At a young age, she heard the story of her grandfather leaving his pregnant young bride to enlist after the attack on Pearl Harbor. After only meeting his infant son (her father) once while on leave, her Grandfather died on the battlefield in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. Grief, it seems, had a hand in shaping her life before it even began.

This Memorial Day, we remember and honor our loved ones who gave the ultimate sacrifice for our country. Our hearts are with their family members 💙🫡🇺🇸🪖

🌸 Mother’s Day can be incredibly tough 🌸

For those who’ve lost their mom, it can be a painful reminder of her absence. For mothers who’ve lost a child, the day is filled with complex emotions.

💔 Mothers who lost their only child may question their identity as a mother. 💔 Mothers celebrated by their living children may struggle to feel joy amidst their grief. 💔 Some bereaved mothers may even feel guilt, as one volunteer shared: “Mother’s Day felt like a scarlet letter, showing what a horrible mother I was.”

If you’re struggling this Mother’s Day, know that you’re in our thoughts. 💕

To help kids express grief positively, our team encourages open communication, we validate their feelings, model healthy emotional expression, and provide outlets for expression like journaling, art, or music ❤️‍🩹

On Saturday, April 12, families will come together at Camp Fire Long Beach for New Hope Family Camp to explore their grief alongside others with similar experiences. Through breakout groups and activities led by our trained staff and facilitators, families will learn how to communicate, face their grief, and receive the support they need. 🦋

We offer a balanced mix of fun activities, including art, games, and community paired with age-appropriate grief education and exercises for each family member.

You’ll find comfort, hope, and healing at New Hope while making new friends on a similar grief journey. Our goal is to support and strengthen each family member so the entire family can move forward together toward a new normal.

Our Story

In 1986, Susan K. Beeney was a registered hospice nurse on the cancer-leukemia ward at Long Beach Veterans Medical Center. Each time her precious patients died Susan was exposed to grief and loss as she witnessed families in despair. At the time, resources for her grieving families were minimal. A heavy burden was laid on Susan’s heart to support these grieving families and pursue a greater understanding of grief education and support.

As a result of seeing the value and endless opportunities through such support groups Susan left her full-time nursing career to develop New Hope Grief Support Community as a non-profit organization. In 2003, New Hope became an official 501(C)(3) organization and has served thousands of bereaved children and families.

New Hope offers community based programs led by volunteers who genuinely care and have experienced a death themselves. Together, through peer support groups, family camps, and workshops we offer an opportunity to share experiences and feelings a safe environment free of judgement. Our vision is to see bereaved children and families with strong support systems living good and flourishing lives after loss.
