Today we cannot celebrate Women’s Equality Day because we are far from equal in our democracy. Here are the steps we must take to work towards a more inclusive democracy:

1️⃣Pass voting rights legislation
2️⃣ Add the Equal Rights Amendment to the Constitution
3️⃣ Restore reproductive rights

To make your voice heard on these issues, We encourage you to sign the League of Women Voters' petition at www.lwv.org/WID23
to let Congress know the will of the people. By joining together and expressing our concerns, we can contribute to shaping a more equitable future for all. Remember that change starts with awareness and action. Let us continue working towards creating a society where every individual is treated with dignity and respect regardless of their gender.

May 20, 2023, marks the 30th anniversary of the passage of the National Voter Registration Act (NVRA), a landmark law that increased accessibility to the electoral process and reformed voter registration. The “motor voter” bill allowed citizens to register to vote at motor vehicle agencies, as well as by mail and through other agencies that serve the public.

REDISTRICTING

The Nassau County Advisory Redistricting Commission held a meeting on November 16th at which time the public had an opportunity to express their opinions on the maps. Michele Lamberti and Barbara Epstein made statements on behalf of the League.

On November 21st the Commission met but could not agree on a map. The Republican map was modified slightly. The 14th Legislative District on their map has 2 current legislators for the same seat, one Democrat and one Republican.

The next step will be to submit all maps, backup data, and all public comments to the Rules Committee and then to the full legislature.

We will be asking for more public hearings on the maps before they are submitted to the Legislature.

We ask that you, as a resident of Nassau County, go to these meetings. It is our chance to have a say in our legislative districts for the next decade.

The Town of Hempstead redistricting commission will be submitting a map for the 6 Councilmatic districts. Check their website. There should be at least 2 minority/majority districts.

The NYS Redistricting Commission has proposed a new map for the NYS Assembly per court order. There will be a hearing on February 28th at Nassau Community College at 5pm open to the public. Check their website for the proposed map.

The League along wth Reinvent Albany, Citizens Union, Common Cause NY, and NYPIRG oppose the Legislative Pay Raise Bill.

The Legislature's proposal has weak controls on outside income, dilutes recommendations of 2018 pay commission, and does little to reduce corruption risk.
