Meet your neighbors and learn about the many benefits and uses of compost! Join us Tuesday, June 9 from 6-7 p.m. at the Whaley Park Social Hall (5620 E. Atherton St.) for a Composting 101 workshop.

Led by City Compost & Recycling Ambassador Dr. Bonnie Gasior, this session a stages of compost demonstration, a lesson on how to top‑dress fruit trees, raised beds, or ornamentals, troubleshooting tips, and a Q+A!

Don't worry if you missed the first two sessions, this workshop will still be informative and helpful!

Close the Loop: Go Behind the Scenes of Recycling!

Join the City of Long Beach and for an educational tour of the WM Orange Recycling Facility, on Tuesday, June 17, and Tuesday, September 14, with 2 tour time options.

This is your chance to deepen your environmental literacy and see the circular economy in action.

Have you ever thought about the journey your recyclables take after they leave the curb?

Recycling is more than just a bin, it’s a complex, fascinating process of resource recovery that helps protect our environment and promote the local economy. 🌍

Tour Dates & Times:

📅 Tuesday, June 17 | Tuesday, Sept 14
⏰ 9:30 a.m. or 11:00 a.m.

Note: Space is limited to 13 people per tour to ensure an impactful experience.

Pre-registration is required, and spots fill up fast!

Eligibility: Open to Long Beach community members (ages 18+).

Accessibility: This is an active tour requiring walking and climbing multiple flights of stairs.

Waitlist: A waitlist will open once the 13 spots are filled.

Securely shred and recycle your unwanted documents on Saturday, June 13, from 8-10 a.m. (or until the on-site mobile shredding trucks reach capacity).

Accepted:
- Confidential documents, white or color paper
- Manila file folders, staples and paperclips
- Envelopes and cardboard
- Up to three boxes per vehicle (box cannot exceed 10” x 12” x 15” dimensions)

Not Accepted:
- CDs, hard drives, cell phones or any electronics
- Three-ring binders, credit cards, hanging file folders
- Metal, plastic or glass objects (no plastic bags either)
- Food, batteries, weapons or hazardous waste

There is a limit of three boxes per vehicle. Each box cannot exceed 10” x 12” x 15” dimensions.

Ever wonder what happens to the recyclables you place in your curbside cart? Join the City of Long Beach and WM for a behind-the-scenes tour of the WM Orange Recycling Facility! See how materials are sorted using technology and trained staff, learn what can and can't be recycled, and discover how people and equipment keep the recycling system running.

Tours are available on June 17 and September 14 at 9:30 a.m. or 11 a.m. Preregistration is required, spots fill quickly.

We love the new blue recycling carts and that recycling guidelines stayed the same.

Making sure your recyclables are empty, clean and dry helps keep your blue recycling cart in top condition. Did you know “empty, clean and dry” means as empty, clean and dry as possible without washing? Think, “spatula” clean.

Follow the same simple recycling guidelines and skip the bag; put recyclables in the cart loose.
