☀️ Another round of hot weather is here. Please take a few extra precautions to help keep your pets safe and comfortable.

🐾 Keep pets indoors or in a cool, shaded area whenever possible.
💧 Make sure they have plenty of fresh, cool water.
🚫 Avoid walks and strenuous activity during the hottest parts of the day.
🔥 Check pavement before heading outside — if it’s too hot for your hand, it’s too hot for paws.
🌡️ Never leave a pet alone in a parked vehicle, even for a few minutes.

Keep an eye out for signs of heat-related illness, including excessive panting, drooling, weakness, vomiting, confusion or collapse. If you suspect your pet is overheating, move them to a cool area and seek veterinary care immediately.

Stay cool, stay safe, and take care of those four-legged family members! 🐶🐱

🌧️🐾 That puddle may look like the perfect post-rain playground—but it’s best to keep your pets out of it.

Here in Los Angeles County, standing water can become contaminated with bacteria from wildlife and rodents. One concern is leptospirosis, a potentially serious disease that dogs can pick up by drinking, swimming in, or walking through contaminated water or soil.

Standing water can also provide breeding grounds for mosquitoes, which can transmit diseases to pets, including heartworm and West Nile virus.

🐕 After the rain, keep walks safe:
• Bring fresh water so your pet isn’t tempted to drink from puddles
• Avoid standing water, especially near trash, wildlife or areas with lots of animal activity
• Wipe muddy paws and bellies when you get home
• Keep your pet’s flea, tick and heartworm prevention up to date
• Dump standing water around your home so mosquitoes can’t breed

A little puddle avoidance = a much happier, healthier walk! 💙🐾

Our hearts are with the staff and volunteers of LA Animal Services’ North Central Animal Shelter and the Western University Veterinary Clinic team following the violent attack on shelter employees late last week.

Animal shelter staff come to work every day to care for animals and serve their communities. They should never have to fear for their safety while doing that work. But for many shelter employees, that fear is an unfortunate reality. Violence, threats, and intimidation against shelter employees are unacceptable, period.

We stand with our colleagues at LA Animal Services and are wishing everyone affected a safe and full recovery. To the North Central team: your DACC family is thinking of you. 🐾

On September 8 & 9, all 7 Los Angeles County Animal Care Centers are joining the ASPCA’s The Rescue Effect campaign—and adoption fees will be waived for two days only! ❤️

Dogs, cats, and small animals are all waiting to meet you, and every adoption includes spay/neuter and a microchip. License and trust fees may still apply.

Whether you’ve been thinking about adopting or simply want to help an animal find a home, tomorrow is the perfect time to visit your local Animal Care Center. Two days can change a life. 🐶🐱🐰
