Henry Lewis, the Jackie Robinson of classical music, broke racial barriers on this 1968 date, becoming the first African American to serve as conductor and musical director of a major American orchestra (New Jersey Symphony.
 
A true pioneer, Lewis was the youngest and first black instrumentalist in a major American orchestra when he joined the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra (1948, age 16) and the first African American to conduct the Metropolitan Opera (1972).
