The LBPOA is proud to announce a new chapter in our Association’s leadership as Gerrit DeJongh assumes the role of President of the Long Beach Police Officers Association.

Having served alongside Rich Chambers and the Board of Directors for many years, Gerrit has been an integral part of the Association’s efforts to serve, support, and advocate for our members. As President, he is committed to building upon the strong foundation already established while continuing to move the organization forward on behalf of Long Beach police officers and their families.

We look forward to the future under Gerrit’s leadership and the continued strength of the LBPOA.

Congratulations to Rich Chambers on his well-earned retirement, and thank you for your years of dedicated service and leadership.

Today, Sgt. Matt Hernandez completed an approximately 22-mile walk across Long Beach, stopping at every LBPD patrol station and the LBPOA office along the way to raise awareness for law enforcement mental health.
The message on the back of his shirt was powerful:

“In memory of and dedicated to all my brothers and sisters in blue who are fighting their mental health battles… and those of us who have lost their war.”

We are proud of Matt for turning awareness into action and helping continue an important conversation that affects far too many in our profession.
In honor of those officers, Matt also made a generous donation to the LBPOA Widows & Orphans charitable fund

Honoring the fallen.

The Long Beach Police Officers Association was honored to attend the 48th Annual California Peace Officers’ Memorial Ceremonies, where 13 fallen officers were added to the memorial—forever etched in stone and in our hearts.

Our Honor Guard proudly participated in the ceremonies. Chief Wally Hebeish was in attendance, along with POA President Rich Chambers and Lieutenant Gerritt DeJongh, who were there to support the family of Alhambra Police Officer Alec Sanders. Officer Sanders began his law enforcement career with the Long Beach Police Department as a member of Academy Class 97.

We stand in remembrance, in honor, and in continued support of those who made the ultimate sacrifice.

Officer Daryle W. Black
Long Beach Police Department
End of Watch: April 30, 2000
Plaque #19

On April 29, 2000, Officer Daryle W. Black and his partner were ambushed while patrolling a residential neighborhood in Long Beach. Without warning, their patrol vehicle was struck by multiple rounds of gunfire from an automatic weapon. Officer Black was critically wounded and, despite the efforts to save him, passed away the following day.

Officer Black was 33 years old.

A United States Marine Corps veteran and former Orange County deputy sheriff, Officer Black brought discipline, knowledge, and heart to the Long Beach Police Department. Assigned to the gang unit, he was known for his deep understanding of gang activity and his commitment to protecting the community—especially its youth.

Those who served alongside him remember a man of strength and integrity, balanced by genuine kindness. He believed in hard work, led by example, and inspired others to be better. As one colleague shared, “He wasn’t Long Beach P.D.’s best-kept secret—he was the best of us.”

Officer Black’s sacrifice marked the first line-of-duty loss for the department in nearly 25 years. His legacy lives on through the officers he influenced, the community he served, and the standard he set.

We honor Officer Daryle W. Black for his service, his courage, and his unwavering dedication.

Deputy Randy Hoppert – End of Watch April 9, 2026
Department: Tulare County Sheriff’s Office

Today, we join our brothers and sisters at the Tulare County Sheriff’s Office in mourning the loss of Deputy Randy Hoppert, who was killed in the line of duty.

Deputy Hoppert, a six-year veteran, was shot while assisting with an eviction service in Porterville. Despite life-saving efforts, he tragically succumbed to his injuries.

This is a heartbreaking reminder of the dangers law enforcement officers face every day while serving their communities.

We extend our deepest condolences to Deputy Hoppert’s family, friends, and the entire Tulare County Sheriff’s Office during this incredibly difficult time.

We stand with you. We honor his service. We will never forget.
