March was a busy and meaningful month at the drop-in center, as we continued to provide consistent support to our unhoused neighbors. Throughout the month, we served a total of 833 hot meals, offering not only nourishment but also a welcoming space where individuals could find connection and community.

One of the most memorable highlights of the month was a special visit from Ken Medema, whose presence brought an incredible sense of joy to the drop-in center. Through his music and heartfelt performance, he created a moment that many of our guests will not soon forget. Several individuals were moved to personally thank him, sharing their appreciation not only for his musical talent but also for his genuine warmth and compassion. It was a powerful reminder of how meaningful connection and kindness can be.

In addition to our weekly meal service, we continued to distribute groceries to seniors and families, adjusting each week as we witness increases mainly to our seniors.

We are deeply grateful to our dedicated staff, volunteers, and partners, especially First Congregational Church of Long Beach, whose continued support makes this work possible. Your generosity and commitment allow us to serve with consistency, dignity, and care.

Thank you for your support Charles! Though February is the shortest month of the year, it certainly felt full. Between seasonal celebrations and community events, it was a month that seemed to move quickly while still keeping us busy.

Throughout the month, we served 640 unhoused guests at our Sunday meals. We also continue to distribute 8–10 grocery bags each week, depending on the number of seniors and families in line. That number has remained steady, though there are weeks when we distribute more, reflecting the ongoing need in our community.

With a mix of cold nights and warm days, we were grateful to welcome our guests indoors each Sunday to relax, enjoy a warm meal, and experience a sense of connection and consistency. We are especially thankful for the continued generosity of FCC, our individual donors, and volunteers who arrive with clothing, hygiene kits, and other much-needed items.

As we move into March and look ahead to spring, we remain grateful for the opportunity to serve and for all who help keep this program going strong.

What began as a simple sandwich in a paper bag grew into a place of warmth, dignity, and community.
Because of Janet Rhodes that small act of kindness became a program that now serves warm meals to more than 150 unhoused neighbors a week.

Janet’s generous heart and belief in helping others laid the foundation for Urban Community Outreach’s Drop-In Center. Her legacy lives on in every meal shared and every life touched.

Thank you, Janet, for showing us how one small act can create lasting change.

As we close out December, Urban Community Outreach reflects on a busy (615 meals) and meaningful month made possible by incredible generosity. We were fortunate to receive support from FCC and many donors who helped us meet the increased needs of the season.

Uplift Charity once again made a strong impact with their annual visit, bringing volunteers, hygiene kits, clothing, and waterproof sleeping bags, arriving just in time for the rainy weather at the end of the month. We were also honored to serve our Christmas meals, and it was humbling to see the gratitude of our unhoused neighbors during a time when many are struggling to make ends meet.

Thanks to a generous Secret Santa, children from families facing financial hardship were able to receive Christmas gifts, bringing moments of joy during the holiday season. Despite some rain toward the end of the month, we were grateful for mostly beautiful weather throughout December, allowing us to serve consistently.

Thank you to FCC, our donors, our volunteers, and especially our dedicated staff for their hard work throughout the holiday season.

This month, we served 700 meals reflecting the continued increase in unhoused neighbors seeking support. November brought both joyful moments and difficult ones, as many of our families and unhoused neighbors faced a particularly tough month. Still, our community came together, and we were able to offer warmth, support, and connection throughout each Sunday.

One of the highlights of the month was welcoming the Dakshini Bengali Association, who returned for the second year to prepare and serve their traditional meal for our unhoused guests. Their generosity and cultural sharing added something truly special and was deeply appreciated.

We also held a wonderful Thanksgiving celebration, bringing comfort and smiles to many who needed it.
We remain deeply grateful to First Congregational Church and all of our generous donors. Because of your kindness, we continue to welcome our neighbors with dignity, warmth, and nutritious meals each week. Your support plays a vital role in helping us meet this growing need. We look forward to a wonderful December filled with joy, community, and the warmth of the Christmas season.
