The London-Laurel area is facing several days of dangerous heat, with temperatures expected to climb into the mid-90s and heat index values nearing 100°. The National Weather Service is urging everyone to take precautions as prolonged exposure to heat and humidity can lead to heat exhaustion and potentially life-threatening heat stroke.
Please stay hydrated, limit strenuous outdoor activities during the hottest part of the day, and take frequent breaks in an air-conditioned or shaded area. Check on elderly family members, neighbors, and anyone who may be especially vulnerable to the heat. Never leave children, pets, or anyone else inside a parked vehicle — even for a short period of time.
Know the warning signs: Heavy sweating, weakness, dizziness, headache, nausea, muscle cramps, confusion, or loss of consciousness can all be signs of heat-related illness. If someone becomes confused, passes out, or has signs of severe heat illness, call 911 immediately and move them to a cool location while help is on the way.
From all of us at the London-Laurel Rescue Squad, please take this heat seriously and look out for one another. Stay cool, stay hydrated, and stay safe!
