Dear Parent/Guardian,
Beginning last school year, all California schools were required to screen students annually in grades Kโ2 for risk of reading difficulties in accordance with Education Code 53008.
Lompoc Unified School District has already been conducting early literacy screenings; however, the updated law requires that families be notified when screening will occur.
Later in the school year, students in kindergarten, first grade, and second grade will participate in a reading screener using DIBELS, which was adopted by the Board of Education on May 27, 2025. This screening measures foundational reading skills such as letter sounds, decoding, word reading, and reading fluency.
The purpose of this screening is to identify students who may benefit from additional reading support as early as possible.
Additional information will be shared with families as we approach the districtโs screening window which will be January 25th.
If you have any questions, please feel free to contact Tina Wall, Director of Curriculum and Instruction.
Sincerely,
Tina Wall
