Play with fire Saturday morning!🔥

Let’s see if we can do a burn this Saturday, the usual approximate 1/3 of the prairie grasses mostly west of Melbourne.
Bring a metal rake, if you have one and help out.
Let the new season begin!
Meet on Melbourne, across from Mike Anderson’s at 10A.

Throughout Little Turtle Waterway Plaza are 32 granite insets, each one with a different picture from Cass County history.
We will share them in a series: “Stories Told in Stone.”
Inset 1: ReVere Motor Car Company, inset location circled in red.
The ReVere motor car company of Logansport made luxury cars in the early 1920s. One raced in the Indianapolis 500, and they even made a special car for the king of Spain. The company was short-lived, and closed in 1922.
A Logansport resident, Rick Crawley, found one for sale in Las Vegas in 1998. Money was raised to purchase it and bring it back to Logansport where it had been built.
The ReVere car is owned by Cass County historical Society, and a wing is being designed as a permanent display location for this car.
Artist: Gordon Gheris.

Do you wonder about the gateway to Little Turtle Waterway?
The gateway was made from an old railroad signal bridge that once held lights to tell train engineers when to stop and go. It stood over two sets of tracks that run past Cole Hardwood, and the concrete bases where it once stood are still intact, just south of US 24. Brown Construction moved it to the plaza and added the sign to create a gateway for people to enter the park.
The gateway has been moved once again to its current spot as the entrance to Ironhorse Park and Little Turtle Waterway Trail.
The gateway has four “medallions”— round pictures carved in granite. We asked an artist from Chief Little Turtle’s tribe, Catherine Nagy-Mowry, to draw the pictures for the stone carvings.
You may be surprised to learn that Ms Mowry lives in Indiana, because many people think that the Miami people were forced to leave Indiana. It is true that many of the Miami now live in Oklahoma, but many other Miami people managed to stay in their Indiana homeland and many continue to live in Cass County.
The Tribal Council of the Miami Nation of Indians of Indiana is in Peru, just upstream from Logansport on the Wabash river.

PTELEA LANTERNS
Ptelea make these lovely pods in the fall, and now that the leaves have dropped, it is easy to spot the pods. Gradually the pods will get translucent and delicate like paper, and look like little Chinese lanterns. You can find Ptelea shrubs along Little Turtle Waterway, on the river side of the trail at the 12th Street Bench (the long stone bench). Ours are about 6 or 8 feet tall.
