We’re doing fine! 😁
What a day! The first group of sixth graders made it to Bluff, Utah today where we are camped at Sand Island. All the kids are settled in for the night and I’m writing this with a billion stars overhead (see last photo). Tomorrow we launch on the San Juan River for a three-day, twenty-seven mile float through the area that is part of the Bears Ears vicinity. This is our 10th year offering this capstone field experience for sixth graders. We place a heavy focus on the ancient civilizations aspect of our social studies curriculum, the hero’s journey for our language arts curriculum, and work in some art, science, and math concepts as well.

Pics 4-6: We bought the bus driver an ice cream cone and caught some kids loitering at the Patio Diner in Blanding, Utah 🤣
Pics 7-20: Our evening at the Sand Island Campground—a light show, learning circles, pictograph and petroglyph panels, and astronomy with Mr. Baggaley.

We’ve had a decade-long partnership with this invasive species project at Hardware Wildlife Management Area. Fourth graders worked with professionals from Cache County W**d Department and biologists and specialists from Utah DWR collecting data and learning about invasive plants such as Canada thistle and spotted knapweed. The goal is to improve the quality of hay used to feed wintering elk and to improve browsing habit for deer and elk the rest of the year. This project has been a great success, reducing Canada thistle coverage in randomly sampled plots from 31% ten years ago to 15%. This is a fantastic day of learning for our students and they provide meaningful service on our Utah public lands.

The last group of sixth graders had a fantastic day on the Naomi Peak (9,983ft) trail today! Naomi Peak is the highest point in the Bear River Range. This is a great way to kick off the school year for these sixth graders. Along the way we learn some science concepts, focus on writing, build relationships, and boost confidence. kids learn a lot about themselves when they have to dig down deep to do hard things. And we found the first yellow leaf of fall!

Yesterday’s group of sixth graders stood atop the highest peak in the Bear River Range—Mount Naomi 9,980 ft. We introduced some science concepts (phenomenon), and did some journaling and sketching. It was a good day on the trail and a great way to kick off the school year!

It’s good to have our field programs rolling again!. Monday’s group of sixth graders were supposed to head to Mount Naomi— but the Logan Canyon Road was closed due to the wildfire, so we put together a Plan B in Providence Canyon. These kids hiked 3 1/2 miles and gained 1000 vertical feet of elevation.

Welcome back! We are rolling!

‘Twas the night before school started and all through the building not a creature was stirring…..
Tonight the building is empty. The halls are vacant and silent. The classrooms are clean and tidy. Supplies and name tags are on desks. Expectations are posted on the walls. We have been working hard for the last week and now, everything is ready.
We cannot wait for tomorrow when our halls will be filled with the children, the chatter, the smiles, and the excitement that we love. We can’t wait to see you and your little ones.

Can you guess whose classroom is whose?
