The natural history of this region is as fascinating as the caves are beautiful. Here, in these sandstones and shales, one can read Ohio's history from the rocks. The scenic features of the six areas of the Hocking Hills State Park complex are carved in the B

lackhand sandstone. This bedrock was deposited more than 350 million years ago as a delta in the warm shallow sea which covered Ohio at that time. Subsequent millions of years of uplift and stream erosion created the awesome beauty seen today. The cave areas were well-known as scenic attractions by 1870. In 1924, the first land purchase by the state was made to preserve the scenic features. This first parcel of 146 acres included Old Man's Cave. Subsequent purchases built acreage while the areas existed under the Department of Forestry as State Forest Parks. The Department of Natural Resources was created in 1949 and the new Division of Parks assumed control of the Hocking Hills State Park complex, which today includes the six park areas. A dining lodge and cottages were opened in 1972. These cottages, together with a campground, provide overnight facilities in one of the most beautiful areas of our state.

Our very own Natural Resource Worker, Re*****on, saved the day at the Visitor Center today! A big brown bat found his way inside the building and needed a little help finding the exit.

Thanks to Re*****on's quick thinking and gentle hands, this little guy has been safely released back into the woods where he belongs — probably off to catch some bugs and enjoy the evening air!

Big thanks to the wildlife heroes who work hard every day to keep both our visitors AND our wild neighbors safe here at Hocking Hills!

It’s been a kid-tastic couple of days at Hocking Hills State Park!

We spent time out at a Scouting America camp with Owl Capone, where campers got an up-close look at one of our favorite feathered ambassadors and asked some great questions along the way.

Back at the park, Kids Corner was full of curious young minds learning about hemlock trees, our waterbodies, and Ohio’s native mammals. Between hands-on activities and lots of great conversations, it’s been such a fun reminder of how excited kids are to connect with nature.

💚🐢Protect Our Wildlife at Hocking Hills 🐢💚

We wanted to share a quick but important update from the trails today. Our team responded to reports of an injured common snapping turtle near Lower Falls. Sadly, we also learned that a few people were throwing stones at it.

We know most of our visitors love nature as much as we do, so we want to gently remind everyone that this kind of behavior is never okay. The wildlife here represents the very heart of Hocking Hills; they are a vital part of what makes this park so special, and they deserve to share this space safely.

The Good News: Our staff was able to track down the turtle and safely move it to a quiet, secure area where it can rest and recover in peace.

How You Can Help:
We need your help to keep Hocking Hills a safe haven for both people and animals. Please keep these simple rules in mind next time you visit:

🥾Stay on the trails: It protects fragile habitats (and keeps you safe, too!).

🦌Give wildlife space: Never harm, disturb, or get too close to the animals.

🐻Don't feed the wildlife: Human food does a lot more harm than good.

A huge thank you to the alert hikers who brought this to our attention. Let's look out for each other, and our wild neighbors, out there! 🌲

You may be asking yourself, "what do I do if I see a baby animal left alone in my yard?" (Great question by the way). Here are some things you need to know:
- Wildlife parents often leave their nest or young in a location they consider safe while they forage or hunt nearby.
- A parent is almost always nearby and will come back as needed to feed and care for them.
- The best thing for you to do is keep your distance (and be proud that your yard feels safe for wildlife!)

Our team has been getting their hands dirty (literally) installing a brand-new pollinator garden! Every single plant in this space is native to Ohio, which means it’s perfectly suited to support the bees, butterflies, and other pollinators that rely on these landscapes.

Pollinators are a huge part of what keeps our ecosystems healthy and thriving, and giving them the right plants makes all the difference.

A big shoutout to our incredible staff and maintenance crew who put in the time, muscle, and care to make this happen. From hauling plants to getting everything in the ground, this was truly a team effort—and it shows.

We can’t wait to see this garden grow, fill in, and come alive over the next few seasons. It’s going to be something really special!🪻
