Chief Shainline and Deputy Chief Lucas spent the last two days training in Towanda attending Event Security Planning for Rural Communities. This course was developed and delivered by FEMA's Center of Rural Development Consortium and was attended by a diverse group which included Emergency Managers, EMS managers, Sheriff/Police Department leaders, Public Works leaders and more. The class focused on performing event risk assessments, building proper event security plans and how to keep all stakeholders informed/secure for small and large events like street fairs, parades, and other public/private gatherings.
Participating in trainings such as these, bolster our commitment to keeping our communities safe, no matter the situation.

In case you've been living under a rock this week, or busy running ambulance calls, like us -- It's EMS Week!
This year's theme is "Better Together" -- and we can't agree more with that sentiment.
One example is in training. By training together in-house, with our neighboring first responders, and other community partners, our patients benefit greatly.
This past January, we were dispatched to a maternity call in Lamar Township, where the Midwives were in the middle of a child birth scenario that turned into a critical situation. Baby Laverne experienced shoulder dystocia (stuck shoulder) while being born. After 10+ minutes of become stuck, his highly trained midwives were able to successfully deliver him, but he wasn't breathing. When QRS (Lamar Twp. Vol. Fire Company) and our crew members arrived, we integrated into the resuscitation effort and provided advanced level care. Ultimately, Baby Laverne became our first "SAVE" for 2026. When care was transferred to the Life Flight - Geisinger, he was breathing on his own and improving with every minute. He was Life Flighted down to Danville and spent just under 2 weeks in the hospital before being discharged to home with no deficits!!
Last night, right before our "Chats with the Midwife" class, Baby Laverne was the star of our show. His parents brought him to visit and meet the crew members that were involved in his special delivery.
Baby Laverne is a shining example of what "Better Together" looks like. Without teamwork, the drive to provide the best care for our patients, and the support from our communities -- these stories don't happen.
Happy EMS Week to our staff, volunteers, and our neighboring agencies! πŸš‘

This month's continuing education is open to ALL EMS Provider levels. Please join us and gain some valuable insight for these low frequency/potential high acuity calls.
We welcome Midwife Lisa Beherec! Her midwife group provides care throughout our community with many years of experience.
Did you know that our agency assists in delivering 1-2 babies a year? We also respond on an average of a half dozen incidents where the midwives call for our assistance for potential transports of mother or her baby. Due these interactions, we saw a great opportunity for education to build strong emergency care when needed! πŸ©·πŸ’™

Last week our providers had the exciting education opportunity to participate in a High Risk EMS Procedure Lab night with our Medical Director, Dr. Schauer at CU-Lock Haven's Willis Health Professions Building.
The evening consisted of a lecture/review portion and then the practice of procedures (needle decompression, Interosseous Access, Surgical Airways and techniques with our video laryngoscopes) in the cadaver lab. (Shout-out to Dr. Porter for staying late to help facilitate!!)
Having the opportunity to practice these high-risk, low-frequency procedures build confidence and muscle memory to provide treatment under high pressure scenarios.
