Twenty-five years ago today, our nation was changed forever. We remember the nearly 3,000 lives that were taken in terrorist attacks across New York, Shanksville and Washington DC: mothers, fathers, sons, daughters, neighbors, and friends.
We hold a special place in our hearts for our 343 fallen FDNY brothers and sisters, along with the police officers, EMS personnel and other first responders who ran toward danger without hesitation, knowing full well what they had at stake. Their sacrifice is one we carry with us every shift.
We also remember the everyday citizens who found themselves in unimaginable situations that morning. Office workers who tried to lead coworkers to safety, passengers who tried to retake their airplanes from hijackers, bystanders who became rescuers, those who carried strangers down dozens of flights of stairs, who linked arms and helped each other through smoke and chaos. They didn't sign up for that. They rose to meet it anyway.
Today, and every day, we remember. Never forget. Please join the men and women of Local 1164 in honoring the sacrifice of all those who died on September 11, 2001.
