Tonight, Rachel and Jon Polin did something extraordinary. They invited 2,000 strangers into the most painful chapter of their lives. As they spoke about their son, Hersh, it became clear that grief is not something that fades or disappears. It is something they carry with them every day, alongside an enduring love for their son.

What stayed with me was not only the heartbreak of their story, but the remarkable dignity with which they tell it. Their words were raw, honest, and deeply human.

Thank you to Temple B’nai Abraham and Jordana Horn for creating space for our community to listen, learn, and bear witness. May Hersh’s memory be a revolution.

“You can wash away the paint, but can’t wash away our pride.” I was proud to stand with Garden State Equality and our LGBTQIA+ community today in West Orange to show that visibility matters and that love always wins.

I want to thank Governor Mikie Sherrill, Attorney General Jennifer Davenport, and the New Jersey State Police for the briefing provided this morning regarding the events at Delaney Hall.

As a first-generation immigrant, I understand firsthand the hopes, sacrifices, and challenges that many immigrant families face. I also understand the fear, frustration, and strong emotions surrounding these issues.

We were advised that the New Jersey State Police spent hours working to maintain order and prevent the situation from escalating. I want to be clear: the New Jersey State Police are not ICE. They are there to protect everyone involved and keep our communities safe.

I continue to believe we need to lower the temperature. Peaceful protest is a fundamental right, but escalation risks creating unintended consequences for the very families many are trying to support.

If individuals detained at Delaney Hall are moved to facilities farther from New Jersey, it can become more difficult for families to visit them, communicate with them, and maintain access to legal representation.

Additional demonstrations, including counter-protests, are expected. Please remain peaceful, stay vigilant, and avoid engaging with those seeking to provoke conflict. Not everyone participating may be from our communities or have the best interests of New Jersey families at heart.

Let us continue to look out for one another, respect one another, keep our communities safe, and advocate openly for what matters to us.

Last night, I was honored to attend the Essex County Commissioners’ Jewish American Heritage Month Celebration in Livingston.

Congratulations to all of the evening’s honorees: Robin Schlager, Congregation Ahavas Sholom, and Rabbi Matthew Gewirtz. Each has made meaningful contributions to our communities and exemplifies the values of service, leadership, and compassion.

It was especially meaningful to celebrate two individuals I deeply admire: Commissioner Patricia Sebold, whose remarkable 33 years of service to Essex County have left an indelible mark on our community, and Rabbi Matthew Gewirtz, whose leadership, wisdom, and commitment to bringing people together continue to inspire so many.

Pat has been a mentor, friend, and role model throughout my journey in public service. Her integrity, compassion, and dedication to serving others have touched countless lives, including my own. I was thrilled to see her receive this well-deserved recognition.

As my rabbi, Rabbi Gewirtz has also had a profound impact on my life. His thoughtful leadership and commitment to faith, learning, and community have strengthened and enriched our region in immeasurable ways.

Congratulations to all of the honorees, and thank you to the Essex County Commissioners for hosting such a meaningful celebration.

To all celebrating, Happy Eid al-Adha!

This morning in Livingston, we came together to pause, reflect, and pay tribute to the servicemen and women who gave their lives in defense of our country and our freedoms. Today, we honor the brave men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to our country. Their courage and selflessness will never be forgotten. As we spend time with loved ones this Memorial Day, may we also pause to reflect on the tremendous cost of our freedoms and keep our fallen heroes and their families in our hearts. Lest we forget.
