The Live Oak Police Department would like to make the public aware of an ongoing rental scam circulating on Facebook Marketplace and other online platforms.

Individuals are posting local homes for rent that are actually listed for sale on legitimate realtor websites. The scammers are then instructing potential renters to send money through electronic payment applications such as Chime, Cash App, Venmo, or similar services in order to “view” the property or hold the home.

This should be an immediate red flag.

Legitimate property owners, realtors, and rental companies typically do not require payment simply to view a property.

If you are currently searching for a home to rent, please take the time to research the listing before sending money or personal information. Verify the property through legitimate real estate websites, contact licensed realtors directly, and never send money to someone you have not met or verified.

If you believe you may have been the victim of a scam, please contact the Live Oak Police Department.

Congratulations to Investigator Kim Lane on her retirement after 39 years of dedicated service to the citizens of Suwannee County.

Kim began her career with the Live Oak Police Department from 1986 to 1990, serving as both a secretary and dispatcher. In 1990, she joined the Suwannee County Sheriff’s Office as a secretary, where she quickly became an integral part of the agency. She later took on the role of Victim’s Advocate, providing critical support to those in need during some of their most difficult moments.

In 2001, Kim stepped into the role of a full-time deputy. In 2003, she transferred within the agency to serve as a School Resource Officer, where she made a lasting impact on countless students. In 2014, she was promoted to Corporal within the School Resource Division, a testament to her leadership and dedication. In 2017, she transferred to Investigations, where she continued to excel and make a significant impact on the community she served.

Throughout her career, Kim has served under four sheriffs, Sheriff Leonard, Sheriff Williams, Sheriff Cameron, and Sheriff St. John, earning the respect of each through her professionalism, work ethic, and unwavering commitment to the community.

Kim has impacted lives at every level, from children in the school system to adults throughout the county. She represents the true embodiment of a caring law enforcement officer and public servant.

She will be truly missed by all who had the privilege of working with her, including the men and women of the Live Oak Police Department.
