Today, the City of Live Oak joins communities across the nation in recognizing Juneteenth, a day that commemorates an important milestone in American history and celebrates the enduring values of freedom, opportunity, and unity.
Juneteenth marks June 19, 1865, when Union troops arrived in Galveston, Texas, and announced that enslaved people in Texas were free, more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation had been issued. The day has since become a lasting symbol of freedom, perseverance, and the continued pursuit of liberty for all Americans.
Juneteenth serves as an opportunity to reflect on our nation's history, honor the resilience and contributions of African Americans, and recognize the progress that has been made throughout generations. It also reminds us of the importance of learning from our past as we work together to build stronger communities and a brighter future.
As we observe this day, we encourage residents to take time to learn about its significance, celebrate the rich cultural heritage that helps shape our nation, and appreciate the freedoms and opportunities we share.
From all of us at the City of Live Oak, we wish you a meaningful and reflective Juneteenth.
