The non-partisan Suwannee County Voters League held its annual banquet last night and it was fantastic!

With a room packed with Suwannee Democrats! (And a few folks from the other side.)

The theme was "Political Change Begins With Us" and the Speaker, Dr. Leticia Allen, really drove home the message of how important our democracy is, and the vital need to make sure that everyone votes and every vote is counted. Her talk highlighted the struggle of the civil rights movement to secure the precious and sacred right to vote, and how important it is for us to work to make that right a reality.

Bobby Brady and Tommie Jefferson, candidates for City Council in the fast-approaching May 5th elections were there. ☺️🌟

And LOTS of folks from our Suwannee Dems precinct leadership!

Congratulations to our own chair Mary Beasley, and to rest of the Voters League on a great night!🌟🇺🇸

12/25 Today in Florida History from the Florida Historical Society

1951 – A bomb exploded under the home of pioneering civil rights activists, Harry T., and his wife, Harriette V., Moore in Mims, fatally wounding the two on this date. Harry T. Moore became a field officer for the NAACP and the group’s president in 1941. He helped register tens of thousands of African American voters. Harry, a school administrator in Brevard County, and Harriette, a schoolteacher, lost their jobs in the county when they advocated an end to educational segregation and equal pay for African American teachers. The bombing was thought to be a Ku Klux Klan response to a series of letters Harry Moore wrote to state and federal officials, calling for an investigation into the deaths of four African American prisoners in Lake County. However, this has never been proven. The Moore Memorial Park and Cultural Center in Mims features a replica of their house and allows visitors to explore the history of the modern Civil Rights Movement and its effect on large and small communities.
