Teens! Earn community service hours while learning how to make a real difference in your community! Register in ENGAGE civic Academy, a partnership between CALS and Arkansas Civic Action Network to give high school students hands-on opportunities to meet community leaders, understand how decisions get made, and practice using their own voice. The academy begins September 12th and includes five sessions held every other Saturday from 1:00pm to 4:00 pm. Students will work with other young people to tackle real community issues, and build skills they can use in school, college, work, and civic life!

Our neighbors at the Southwest Community Center are getting a bee hive and we’re hosting a kids bee club here at the library!

In partnership with the community center and Calm+Confidence Beekeeping join us for our first meeting on Wednesday, September 9th @ 4pm to start learning the basics of keeping honeybees. Join Legal Aid of Arkansas, Inc. at Dee Brown Library Saturday, September 12th at 1 pm in English or 2:30 pm in Spanish for a free presentation covering Arkansas renters' rights, landlord and tenant responsibilities, leases, evictions, fair housing protections, and where to get legal help. Registration is not required.

Our 'Pin Pals' participants have finished the first few weeks of Sewing Classes this month! Check out these amazing bucket hats and historical style tomato pin cushions. Amazing work from these beginners! We still have a few weeks left with Abbie Deville of Cat Scratch Vintage! More projects to come and a few repeats next month! 🪡

Hola! 👋 Our Spanish I and Spanish II students proved just how far 5 weeks of conversation practice can take you — over a shared meal, no less!
Spanish I students introduced themselves entirely en español, sharing their names, hometowns and favorite foods.

Meanwhile, Spanish II students leveled up with a radio show role-play, chatting about their hobbies and favorite music or artists — all off the cuff.

¡Muchas gracias to Escuela de la Lengua Española for equipping our students with real, conversational Spanish skills they can actually use!

There is still time to visit CALS Dee Brown Library for their Back to School Fair. The CALS Cruiser is there along with a bounce house and lots of pizza🍕.
Inside, you can visit Be Mighty Little Rock for some swag, get a free haircut for boys, and a free dental screening. The first 100 kids who attend the Chase Bank workshop will also receive a backpack filled with school supplies. The fair runs from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., Thursday, July 30. See you soon!
