Disability Rights Arkansas DRA is a statewide nonprofit organization that advocates for the rights of people with disabilities. As a part of that mandate, every state and U.S.

Disability Rights Arkansas provides equal rights and public access protection for people with all types of disabilities. We advocate for basic rights (like access to public places), guard against abuse and neglect in public facilities (such as the use of deadly restraints or the seclusion of children) and provide legal oversight of state agencies to ensure accountability in housing, treatment, emp

loyment, education and other direct services. Did you know that Dolly Parton's Imagination Library did more than just provide books to kids? Anyone who registers their child to be a recipient of DPIL will receive a developmentally appropriate book each month. To make it even better, DPIL has partnered with the American Printing House for the Blind since 2011 to make books accessible for kids with visual impairments through braille and audiobooks.

The world will mourn Dolly for a long time, but the disability community celebrates her. Dolly, thank you for making literacy and education more accessible for children with disabilities, especially those who live in rural areas. Your work will never cease!

Looking for disability awareness training for your classroom, school, or educational organization? Invite Disability Rights Arkansas!

We’re available to provide educational disability awareness trainings that help students and educators better understand disability, accessibility, inclusion, and disability rights.

Whether you’re looking for a classroom presentation, staff training, student workshop, or school-wide program, our team can tailor presentations to meet the needs of your school or group. Trainings can cover topics like disability etiquette, accessibility, advocacy, inclusive practices, and understanding the rights of people with disabilities.

Our goal is to help create classrooms and schools where students with and without disabilities feel included, respected, and empowered.

Every child deserves a place to make memories with their community.

We’re highlighting Mills Park in Bryant, a beautiful example of what inclusive recreation can look like when accessibility is built into the playground from the start.

With wheelchair-accessible ramps leading throughout the play structure, smooth accessible surfacing, wide pathways, and plenty of opportunities for climbing, sliding, and exploring, Mills Park creates space for children with different abilities to play side by side. The shaded areas also give families a comfortable place to enjoy the park while kids make memories together.

Accessibility doesn’t have to mean sacrificing fun. It means making sure more children can experience the fun together.

We’re grateful to the City of Bryant for prioritizing inclusive recreation and creating a space where every child has the opportunity to play, explore, and feel like they belong.

"The older he got, the more accessible the farm became."

Reuel Holland was a cattleman from the day he was born until the day he died. Holland battled dementia, but that didn't stop him from checking on his cattle — even from the nursing home. Born and raised in the River Valley, Reuel alongside his twin (Leuel, pictured in photo 2 and 4) and their brother Frank worked on their family owned and operated dairy and beef cattle ranch, now having been passed down 6 generations.

With age, the Holland brothers couldn't ride horseback anymore. They needed assistance with chores here and there. 'Working cattle' the way they knew how wasn't feasible anymore. Instead of giving up, they chose accessibility. Tools like tractors, side-by-sides, chutes, squeeze gates, pneumatic-dart medicine guns, hydraulic bale spears, power steering — it all made farming easier and more accessible.

This is a shining example of how universal design made a tradition more accessible for aging generations as well as the disabled population. DRA would love to hear how universal design has changed your family's life! Submit your story and photos to [email protected] to be featured.
