As many of you have already heard, it is with the greatest of sadness we announce the passing of the Division of Aeronautics’ former Director, John Knight.
John’s name still echoes in our halls. Stories full of wisdom, heart, and plenty of humor are shared fondly and often in our offices. He was truly a giant—not only in Arkansas aviation and business, but also in his community and, most importantly, among his beloved family. Please hold his wife, Rose, and his sons, Tim and Todd Knight, close in your thoughts during this difficult time.
An advocate for progress, John helped shape the aviation landscape of Arkansas in ways that will be felt for generations. During his tenure as Director, he championed an increase in funding for our agency’s grant appropriation from $500,000 to $15 million. This tremendous increase allowed even the smallest airports throughout the state to grow, improve, and contribute to the economic successes of their communities. After 27 years with the agency, Director Knight retired in 2014.
In 2015, he was inducted into The Arkansas Aviation Historical Society's Hall of Fame, an honor he held in high regard. Shortly after his retirement, he received the Kenneth A. Rowe Ambassador of Aviation Award from the National Association of State Aviation Officials. This award, given by unanimous decision of the NASAO Board of Directors, recognizes leaders who embody “spirit, optimism, and fierce pride in the capabilities of state aviation agencies.”
(NASAO and our staff tried to surprise him with the award at the 2017 annual convention, but anyone who knows John knows he asked meaningful and to-the-point questions — it was impossible to get this surprise past him!)
To memorialize his dedication and lasting contributions, the City of Arkadelphia recently announced that its terminal building will be named in his honor.
His impact extends far beyond his official capacities. John was a trusted leader, a genuine friend, and a source of wisdom to all who knew him.
While his personal and professional accomplishments are far too extensive to capture here, we are forever grateful for the time we had with him. Like all those who leave a lasting imprint, his time with us feels far too short.
Please join us in honoring his memory.
