As we approach the 250th anniversary of the United States, we look back to the 150th Capital City Anniversary Celebration, also known as LR 150. This celebration, held in 1971, commemorated 150 years of Little Rock being home to the capital of Arkansas. This citywide festivity held several events and ceremonies. These included plenty of live music, historical reenactments, and the first ever annual High School Girls All-Star game, held at the Barton Coliseum.

As we approach the 250th anniversary of the United States, we look back to the 150th Capital City Anniversary Celebration, also known as LR 150. This celebration, held in 1971, commemorated 150 years of Little Rock being home to the capital of Arkansas. Live music played a big part in celebrating this historic year. The Barton Coliseum, located within the Arkansas State Fairgrounds, hosted the Masters Festival of Music in 1971. This event showcased many talented musical acts, including legendary saxophonists Boots Randolph, and was attended by many prominent figures in Pulaski County.

Unveiling the History of the USCT in Arkansas
Legacies & Lunch June 2026

CALS Main Library Darragh Center & online via Zoom

Historian Ronnie Nichols and sculptor Vinnie Bagwell will discuss the history of the U.S. Colored Troops in Arkansas and the new monument erected in CALS Library Square to commemorate their service.

We are excited to offer a lunch including a sandwich, chips, a cookie, and a drink to in-person attendees in 2026, courtesy of the CALS Foundation. Meals are limited and will be offered on a first-come first-served basis. We cannot accommodate dietary restrictions or allergies, and registration does not guarantee lunch will be available.

This program will be followed by a dedication of the monument in Library Square.

We are now accepting applications for the 2026 Community History Seminar hosted by the CALS DIY Memory Lab and Butler Center for Arkansas Studies

The seminar is a free evening cohort model program designed especially for community-based organizations in Central Arkansas, the seminar supports groups with historically significant or at-risk records, particularly those documenting the experiences and histories of marginalized communities.
