The GOP is holding its first midterm convention, they have resorted to giving the tickets away for free because people won’t go. They are calling it "Trump-a-palooza."

The event is this week, and organizers have been running a public ticket lottery, blasting out unsolicited "FREE TICKETS" texts to fill the arena, which according to the Daily Beast, is the sort of thing you do when the seats are not filling on their own.

This goes beyond general attendance. Politico called around 70 Republican House candidates and 45 of them said they will not be there. These are the candidates in the tightest races in the country, the ones who need every bit of turnout Trump can supposedly deliver, and they have looked at the math and decided that being seen with him is the bigger risk.

Their own party's headliner has become someone they would rather not stand next to on camera. The pollster's read was blunt: hugging Trump wins a primary and can lose a general, and these people already survived their primaries.

What remains unclear is if the $25,000 attendance fee for House party members also played a part.

So the party will pack the room however it can, with lottery winners and free-ticket texts and whoever answers the call.

The cameras will find a crowd. But the empty chairs that matter are the ones reserved for the people running in November, the ones who know exactly what Trump is worth on a ballot right now.
