Independent Voter named Unite NY one of 10 organizations independent voters should watch.

We're in good company, with groups across the country working to give people more say in who represents them.

Our five pillars haven't changed: ranked choice voting, open primaries, ballot access, term limits, and citizen ballot initiative.

Have an idea for how to make New York better? Right now, there's only one path: convince the legislature to take it up.

In most other states, there's a second path. Gather enough petition signatures, and you can put an issue directly on the ballot for a vote.

New Yorkers want that option. Our February Voter Empowerment Index found 74% support creating a citizen ballot initiative process here.

Making it easier for independent candidates to qualify wouldn't just add names to the ballot. It might change who shows up to vote.

In our July Voter Empowerment Index, 44% of New Yorkers said they'd be more likely to vote if ballot access rules changed.

New York has no term limits for statewide office. A governor, an attorney general, a comptroller can all serve indefinitely.

Most New Yorkers would change that. Our February Voter Empowerment Index found that 82% support term limits for statewide elected officials.

Instead of picking just one, you rank your choices in order. If you don’t like an option, you don’t have to rank it at all.

If your top pick can't win, your vote moves to your next choice and keeps working for you.

Same ballot. Same polling place. More say in who wins.

The headline finding: 82% of New Yorkers say independent candidates should face the same signature requirements as major party candidates, or lower ones.

That's not a close call. It's the kind of agreement you rarely see on any issue.

To run for statewide office in New York, a major party candidate needs 15,000 signatures to get on the ballot. An independent candidate needs 45,000.

It wasn't always that way. Until 2020, the requirement was the same for everyone. New Yorkers don't think the change was fair. In our latest Voter Empowerment Index, 82% of New York voters said independent candidates should face the same—or lower—signature requirement as major party candidates.

Tens of thousands of New Yorkers signed petitions to put open primaries on the ballot in New York City.

The city Board of Elections threw them out.

We’re now asking a judge to review those petitions line by line. The people who signed their names deserve to know their signatures were counted.

Open primaries would give every registered voter a say—not just those who are affiliated with a party. Do you support open primaries?
