A takeaway moment from the 2026 Foundation Golf Tournament:

Our New Friend, Stu

Roy Fillion, North Dakota Veterans Home Foundation Board member, and Susie Schlecht of the North Dakota Veterans Home had the incredible honor of making a new friend and perhaps a future resident of the North Dakota Veterans Home in 50 years or so!

This is our new friend, Stu.

A conversation that started with a question about his very cool golf shirt led us to learn that Stu is from Hawaii and is the son of a Marine who served in Vietnam. With humility, Stu shared that he is a Navy veteran, corpsman, and Purple Heart recipient who served in Afghanistan.

Stu, you made a great day even better. Thank you for sharing a little of your story with us and for your service to our country.

We also appreciate your help in keeping our golfers well fed throughout the day. Your generosity and fellowship were among the highlights of a wonderful tournament. It was a pleasure meeting you, and we hope our paths cross again soon.
♥️🇺🇸
When NDVH Foundation Board Chairman/ Vietnam Veteran, Jim Fenstad, discovered that Stu had served in Afghanistan, he presented him
with a bracelet representing veterans who served in Afghanistan.

The sun was out in full force, shining brightly on the golfers at the North Dakota Veterans Home Foundation Golf Tournament in Mapleton. The beautiful weather provided a perfect backdrop for a day of golf, camaraderie, and support for the residents of the North Dakota Veterans Home.

A heartfelt thank you to all the members of the North Dakota Veterans Home Foundation Board, and especially to Chris Feland and Michelle Feland, for your commitment and countless hours of work behind the scenes. Your dedication, passion, and generosity helped make this year’s tournament a tremendous success.

We also extend our sincere gratitude to the incredibly generous sponsors and golfers. Your support, participation, and commitment to the mission of the North Dakota Veterans Home Foundation made the day both meaningful and memorable.

Together, you helped create a wonderful event that will have a lasting impact on the veterans we are honored to serve. Thank you for making a difference. 🇺🇸⛳️

Our front entrance got a patriotic spring refresh today thanks to Lisbon High School students and Agricultural Teacher Cassidy Bishop!
Freshmen and seniors planted nearly 300 red, white, and blue petunias around our flagpole area. Thank you to the students and Cassidy for helping make the NDVH grounds beautiful!
A special thank you as well to our NDVH maintenance crew for making sure the flowers are protected and cared for during these chilly evenings ahead. 💙

Bridging Generations 💙

Lisbon Elementary School 4th graders made their second visit to the North Dakota Veterans Home as part of a special two-part intergenerational program that brings generations together in a meaningful way.

“The Tiny Printing Press Goes to the Zoo!”—a collaboration between Chahinkapa Zoo and the North Dakota Council on the Arts continues to create lasting connections through art, learning, and shared experiences.

A big thank you to Addy and Dixie from Chahinkapa Zoo for guiding our eager artists through the printing press activity. The creativity, smiles, and conversations shared made for another unforgettable day! 🎨💙

A special moment from the day reminded us just how meaningful these experiences are. One veteran chose to quietly observe, sharing that simply watching the children interact with fellow residents brought him joy. He showed a coffee mug filled with photos of his children and grandchildren and shared that moments like this help him feel closer to family.

Lisbon 4th Graders and all leaders involved—you are difference makers. 💙

Lisbon 2nd graders, North Dakota Veterans Home residents, and the incredible team at the Nome Schoolhouse recently came together over two days to create lasting memories.

From a welcoming barn tour to a shared lunch, hands-on felted soap crafting, and an atmosphere full of warmth and connection, the experience was all about bridging generations in the best way possible.

Moments like these remind us how powerful it is when young and old come together—learning, laughing, and making memories side by side. 💙

Thank you to all who were involved in making this special experience possible!

We are incredibly grateful for the warm support shown to the North Dakota Veterans Home this past weekend!
Dane Grebel, NDVH Administrator, had the honor of serving as a guest speaker at the Lutheran Women’s Missionary League (LWML) Spring Rally held at St. Matthew’s LCMS in Max on April 18, 2026.
We are deeply thankful to have been chosen as the recipient of their special project. Dane was presented with generous monetary donations along with thoughtful items from the NDVH Wish List, all of which will directly benefit our residents.
This meaningful effort was made possible by the North Dakota NW Zone LWML, representing congregations from Trinity of Tolley, Bethlehem of St. John-Upham, St. Matthew’s of Max, St. Mark’s of Minot, Zion of Kramer, Immanuel of Willow Creek, Peace of Garrison, St. Paul’s of Minot, St. Paul’s of Rugby, and Our Savior’s of Bottineau.
Thank you to everyone involved for your kindness and generosity. We are truly blessed to have communities across North Dakota that continue to stand behind and support our veterans. 💙❤️🤍

Through a special grant from Chahinkapa Zoo and the North Dakota Council on the Arts, an incredible opportunity recently came to life at the North Dakota Veterans Home.
Lisbon 4th-graders from Lisbon Elementary School joined our residents for a hands-on, interactive animal experience led by Kathy Diekman, Director of Chahinkapa Zoo, and her husband, Tom. Together, they introduced a Brazilian armadillo, two ferrets, a Blue-Tongued Skink, and a rat snake named Casper—sparking curiosity, conversation, and plenty of smiles.
The program’s goal is simple but powerful: "Studies have shown that following the pandemic, children and elderly alike have been suffering an increased sense of social alienation and negative mental health outcomes. NDCA and Chahinkapa Zoo seek to help bridge the divide and partner children, animals, and elders together for an educational and healing experience."
And the experience isn’t over yet—they’ll be back next week for another special project!
Bonus: Kathy is also an Army Veteran, making this visit even more meaningful to those we serve. ❤️🤍💙!
