Linden Man Arrested with High-Capacity Assault Rifle

Shortly before 2:00 a.m. on Monday, May 25, Officers from the Linden Police Department were assisting Roselle Police Officers investigating a report of shots fired near the 500 block of East St. George Ave.

During the investigation, Officers observed two men dressed in black clothing and wearing ski masks walking north on Clark St. One of the individuals was carrying a black backpack.

Officers stopped the men in the parking lot of 30 Burgers to conduct an investigation. As Officers questioned them, one individual, later identified as Kayvon Branch, 25, of Linden, fled west on E. St. George Ave.

Officers pursued Branch through nearby yards and took him into custody in the 1100 block of Walnut Street.

Police recovered the backpack allegedly carried by Branch. Inside, Officers found a compact assault rifle equipped with a high-capacity drum magazine loaded with hollow-point ammunition.

The second individual was released without charges.

Branch was charged with second-degree unlawful possession of a weapon, possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, fourth-degree possession of a large-capacity magazine, possession of hollow-point ammunition, obstruction, and resisting arrest. He was remanded to the Essex County Jail pending a scheduled appearance in Superior Court.

“We remain committed to reducing violent crime and removing illegal weapons from our streets,” said Linden Police Chief David Hart. “This weapon posed a significant threat to public safety, and our streets are safer today because of the courageous and decisive actions of our Officers in making this arrest.”

These charges are merely accusations. All defendants are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.

According to initial reports, two motorcycles, a 2009 Suzuki and 2009 Kawasaki were both driving north on W. Edgar Rd when they collided. As a result of the contact, the Suzuki was forced into opposing traffic where it collided with a 2025 Mazda CX5 that was traveling southbound.

One of the motorcyclists, a 32-year-old man from Perth Amboy, was pronounced deceased on scene. The second motorcyclist and the driver of the Mazda were both transported to Newark University Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries.

A strong and healthy partnership between EMS, 9-1-1 dispatch, fire services, and law enforcement is a critical part of every city’s success.

This we probably recognize the EMS professionals serving on the front lines. Your dedication, teamwork, and commitment to saving lives makes a lasting impact in our community each and every day, and we are forever grateful for all that you do.

This week, we held our annual Awards Ceremony, recognizing and celebrating the extraordinary efforts of our Police Officers, Dispatchers, and civilian personnel over the past year. Nearly forty individuals were honored for their exceptional service to our community, including removing illegal guns from our streets, providing lifesaving emergency first aid, and taking immediate action to help and protect those in crisis.

A special congratulations to Officer Jeremy Maybaum, who was named Police Officer of the Year; Sergeant Christian Ramirez, who received the Chief’s Award for Leadership; and Evidence Clerk and retired Linden Police Officer Gary Hickman, who received the Chief’s Award for Excellence for non-sworn staff.

Congratulations also to Chief Hart, who is celebrating his 40th year of service as a Police Officer this year. To commemorate this important milestone, Linden P.B.A. Local #42 and the Linden Police Superior Officers Association commissioned a challenge coin in his honor. The coin was presented to Chief Hart, who then presented one to each member of the Department in recognition of the contributions and impact we all make in one another’s lives and careers.

Congratulations and thank you to each of you. We are grateful for your service and for the courage, honor, and resolve you demonstrate each and every day.
