Linden takes on county spelling bee

Four Linden students took part in the 26th Annual San Joaquin County Spelling Bee this week.

Seventh graders Julian Rodriguez of Glenwood Elementary School and Renee Giannecchini of Waterloo Middle School competed in the Junior Division on Wednesday, Dec. 6, while fourth grader Camila Carranza of Glenwood and fifth grader Aubrey Chivers of Waterloo participated in the fourth-through-sixth-grade Elementary Division on Monday, Dec. 4.

In both divisions, the Linden students were competing among more than 40 students from across San Joaquin County. All four students made it through the first round of spelling words, and placing within the top 18 for his division was Julian.

Julian and Renee said it was their first time competing in the Junior Division, but noted that they had experience at the county level as prior participants in the Elementary Division spelling bee. Both said it was hard and they would like to try it again next year.

Among the words that the Junior Division students had to spell were extinguish, heirloom, gracious and utopian. The words in the Elementary Division included pencil, dictionary, receipt and oyster.

San Joaquin County Superintendent of Schools Dr. Troy Brown met with each of the students prior to the competition. Each student was also presented with a special spelling medal.

Honoring our heroes

The Linden community came together on Saturday, Nov. 11, to celebrate and honor veterans everywhere during the annual Veterans Day activities.

To kickoff the ceremony, folks gathered outside the Linden Unified School District office to watch the ceremonial replacement of the American Flag by Marcella and Philip Lawson at the Linden Veterans Memorial. Entertaining the gathering were members of the Linden student choir.

After the flag ceremony, folks went into the Linden High School cafeteria to partake in refreshments and enjoy additional musical performances by the student choir.
