Yesterday, crews responded to a grass fire in the solar array north of town.
Crews found fire burning mainly through dry cheatgrass, with surrounding vegetation still fairly green. Firefighters worked slowly and deliberately due to the solar infrastructure in the area and focused suppression efforts on the burning grass and light fuels.
The fire was knocked down safely and kept from spreading further, and larger electrical equipment in the area was protected by surrounding gravel.
This was a good reminder that even when conditions look green, dry cheatgrass can still carry fire quickly. Please continue to use caution with any activity that could start a fire as we move into warmer, drier weather.
