When the Principal decides to cover lunch duty so the teachers can have a duty-free Friday... but nobody asked the students how they felt about it.

We couldn’t quite agree on the right caption for this moment, but the Asbury staff is beyond grateful for Mr. Grega—the captain of our pirate ship! Thank you for taking over lunch duty today so our staff could enjoy a relaxing, duty-free lunch. The students may not have appreciated your presence as much as we did, but it was a win in our book!

Today, the students and staff at Asbury Academy came together to observe the 25th anniversary of 9/11.

At 8:46 AM, the entire school paused for a quiet moment of silence to honor and remember the lives lost on that day. Following the observance, Asbury Academy’s own Mrs. Davis shared a deeply personal presentation with our community. She reflected on her firsthand experience as a high school senior living in Rutherford, New Jersey, describing what that morning and its aftermath were like for her and her family.

Her testimony provided our students with a powerful, living connection to history, reminding us all of the strength, unity, and resilience that define our community.

Huge thanks to Tanya from the Lincoln County Cooperative Extension's 4-H program for visiting Asbury Works today! She gave our students an inside look at the Veterinary Technician profession—sharing what the job entails day-to-day and how to pursue a career in vet tech medicine.

The highlight of the day? A hands-on pet first aid workshop! Tanya taught students how to safely apply emergency bandages to injured pets to stabilize them before heading to the clinic. Working in teams, students tackled different real-world scenarios and practiced their bandaging skills on various types of animals.

Our students walked away with practical skills, teamwork experience, and a fresh spark for animal care.

September is Attendance Awareness Month, and Asbury Academy is proud to join Lincoln County Schools in reminding families of a simple yet powerful message: Be Here. Every single day in the classroom counts toward a student's success, confidence, and connection to their school community.

Two Asbury Academy students are taking active leadership in this effort by helping track daily school attendance. By visually plotting attendance data on the wall chart each day, these students help keep the entire school accountable for their learning goals and reinforce a culture where showing up is celebrated.

Why Attendance Matters

Academic Growth: Regular attendance directly impacts reading level, math performance, and overall course completion. Missing just two days a month adds up to losing 10% of the school year.

Building Habits: Consistent attendance builds essential life skills, including time management, dependability, and personal responsibility.

Staying Connected: Being present allows students to build strong relationships with peers and teachers, creating a supportive environment where everyone can thrive.

Let's work together to make every day count. Encourage your student to Be Here, all day, every day.

Today during Asbury Works, students put their communication and teamwork skills to the ultimate test today during an engaging team-building activity in the gymnasium. The interactive exercise was designed to highlight the importance of clear listening, precise verbal directions, and mutual trust between partners.

Working in pairs, one student served as the navigator while the other took on the role of the blindfolded walker—using pulled-up hoodie shrouds and covered eyes to block out their sight completely. Plastic cups were scattered across the gym floor, creating a minefield-style obstacle course that required careful coordination to navigate.

To succeed, the guiding partners had to carefully call out clear, step-by-step instructions—such as "take two small steps to your left," "pivot slightly right," or "lift your foot directly ahead"—to safely guide their sightless partners toward a target cup. Once in position, the blindfolded student had to rely entirely on their partner's voice to stomp down and crush the plastic cup target.

The activity brought plenty of energy, focus, and laughter to the room while delivering a practical lesson on effective communication in dynamic environments. By stripping away visual cues, students learned firsthand how specific direction and active listening are crucial components of successful teamwork.

September is Attendance Awareness Month, and Lincoln County Schools is kicking off a new campaign with one simple message:

BE HERE to GET HERE.

Throughout September, we’ll introduce you to LCS students and family members who are already “there” — serving our community, building careers and making a difference. They’ll share how showing up, learning and growing in school helped prepare them for where they are today.

We’re starting with Luke Alston, a fifth grader at St. James Elementary, and his dad, Staff Sergeant James Alston, who serves as a Unit Training NCO/Cannon Section Chief with the NC Army National Guard in Lincolnton.

When asked how school prepared him for his career, Staff Sergeant Alston shared:

“School taught me about teamwork but still being responsible and accountable for the decisions that I made as an individual.”

For Staff Sergeant Alston, his career is also about service. He has assisted with recovery efforts during state active duty and deployed overseas, helping provide safety and security to those in need.

Every day at school is an opportunity to build skills, develop relationships, and prepare for what comes next.

Wherever our students want to go, it starts with showing up.

BE HERE to GET HERE.

School Resource Officer Rushing took a quick break today to challenge one of our students to a friendly game of Infinite Tic Tac Toe.

Small moments like these make a big difference at Asbury Academy. Games, quick chats, and everyday interactions help Officer Rushing build strong, positive relationships with our students, creating a supportive and safe environment where everyone feels connected.

Thank you, Officer Rushing, for taking the time to engage with our students and be such an active, encouraging part of our school community.
