30 Nebraskans lost their lives to domestic abuse in 2025 alone. The people closest to victims often saw warning signs long before a crisis.

These figures come from the Domestic Abuse Death Review Team's 2026 Annual Report, released this month by the Nebraska Attorney General's Office. That team includes appointees from across Nebraska's response system, including our own executive director and representatives from organizations in our network.

Since 2022, the team has completed 41 comprehensive case reviews covering 46 victims, digging into public records and interviews with friends and family to understand what happened before each death. The reviews turned up a sobering pattern: of the 46 victims examined, only one had been in contact with a domestic violence agency in the year before their death. Yet family members knew about prior violence in 74% of cases, and friends knew in 65%. The people closest to victims often saw warning signs long before a crisis.

Recognizing warning signs is one thing. Knowing how to help is another.

Between July 2022 and the end of 2025, 89 Nebraskans lost their lives to domestic abuse, with 30 in 2025 alone, and more intimate partner murder-suicides last year than in 2023 and 2024 combined.

These figures come from the Domestic Abuse Death Review Team's 2026 Annual Report, released this month by the Nebraska Attorney General's Office. The report arrives alongside a warning about resources.

Funding cuts, along with rising inflation and increased demand for services, mean organizations across the state are having to make difficult operational decisions. Rdap, one of our network organizations, has had to close its satellite office in Valentine, close three shelter locations, and lose 4 full-time staff members, all due to funding cuts. And that's just one example.

While we are working to address this issue at the statewide level, we cannot overstate the importance of individual actions. Here's how you can help:

▪️ Support local service-providing organizations directly through donations and volunteerism.

Back-to-school season is prevention season.

Every fall, schools focus on the essentials: schedules, supply lists, orientation days. But this season is also a critical window for something less visible on the checklist: preventing intimate partner violence.

Teen dating violence is more common than many adults realize, and the patterns often take root long before a student ever recognizes a relationship as unhealthy. Schools see students daily, across years of development, which means educators and administrators are uniquely positioned to help build the skills and safety nets that prevent violence before it starts.

Here's how schools can make a real difference this year:

1️⃣ Start with school climate. Surveying students about how safe and supported they feel gives schools real data to build from, not assumptions.

2️⃣ Teach healthy relationships as a core skill. Age-appropriate, medically accurate, inclusive curricula on consent and healthy relationships give students a shared vocabulary before it's tested in real life.

3️⃣ Let students lead. Awareness campaigns designed by and for students tend to land differently than anything handed down from the front of a classroom.

4️⃣ Be upfront about confidentiality. Students deserve to know, before they disclose, what happens next. Clarity up front builds trust and protects both the student and the reporting process.

5️⃣ Partner with local advocates. Survivor advocacy organizations bring expertise and resources most schools can't build alone.

These strategies don't work in isolation. A climate survey without curriculum change won't shift culture, and a student-led campaign without clear reporting practices can leave students unsupported after they speak up. Together, though, they create school communities where students have both the tools to recognize healthy relationships and the confidence to ask for help when something isn't right.

We are proud to welcome Kendra Bryant as our new Director of Survivor Leadership!

She isn't technically new to the Nebraska Coalition, though. You might recognize her as our previous Survivor Leadership Project Coordinator. In that role, Kendra built and implemented a survivor leadership peer-to-peer mentoring program to provide survivors with resources and support while also creating space for them to step into leadership roles and use their lived experience to uplift others.

As she steps into her new role, Kendra answered a few questions to help us get to know her better as the Director of Survivor Leadership.

QUESTION: Tell us about your new position and the work you'll be doing.

KENDRA: I recently stepped into the role of Director of Survivor Leadership at the Nebraska Coalition. In this role, I lead the Survivor Leadership Project, which creates opportunities for survivors to connect, grow, lead, and influence the systems that impact their lives.

The Survivor Leadership Project is grounded in the belief that lived experience is expertise. Through peer support, leadership development, training and education, and policy and systems advocacy, we create opportunities for survivors to bring their lived experience into leadership spaces and help shape programs, services, and systems.

My goal is to help fill gaps that exist after crisis services by creating opportunities for connection, community, leadership, and growth. My goal for the Survivor Leadership Project is to provide opportunities that help survivors move from surviving to thriving.

QUESTION: What inspired you to join the Nebraska Coalition?

KENDRA: I was inspired to join the Nebraska Coalition because of the Survivor Leadership Project. It felt like an opportunity to help build something meaningful from the ground up while giving back to a community that played such an important role in my own journey. I also saw it as an opportunity to continue growing my leadership skills and learning from people doing incredible work across Nebraska.

QUESTION: What about your new role are you most excited about?

KENDRA: What excites me most about this role is the opportunity to give back to the community that poured into me throughout my own journey. As a survivor, advocate, and leader, connection with others who had lived experience helped me navigate challenges, grow, and find my place in this work. I believe survivors have valuable knowledge, skills, and perspectives to offer, and I am honored to help create opportunities for survivors to bring their lived experience into leadership spaces and help shape programs, communities, and systems.

Led by the UNMC College of Public Health, the Institute provides cutting-edge leadership development for a broad cohort of passionate public health leaders. Throughout the year, Rachel will join leaders from across the Great Plains in a yearlong program focused on leadership development, systems thinking, and collaboration to address complex public health challenges.

This week, a team of Nebraskans joined partners from across the country in Washington, D.C. for Federal Advocacy Days:

While in D.C., they met with Nebraska’s congressional staff to share how federal policies directly impact survivors and violence prevention in our state. They shared concerns about:

🔹The rising costs of services and shelter
🔹The challenges in attracting and retaining advocates
These conversations are vital in ensuring federal policymakers understand the real challenges survivors and service providers face here in Nebraska.

We need your help. Federal funding delays are putting lifesaving services for survivors at risk.

Across the country, domestic violence shelters, r**e crisis centers, and survivor advocacy programs are facing dangerous uncertainty as critical funding remains stalled. These delays are already forcing providers to consider staff layoffs, reduced services, longer waitlists, and even closure. For many organizations operating with limited reserves, delayed funding functions as a funding cut. This threatens emergency shelter, crisis response, legal advocacy, counseling, and other essential services survivor rely on.

Survivors cannot afford delays.

It is critical that Congress does everything in its power to urge the Department of Health and Human Services and the Department of Justice to immediately publish the delayed FY26 Notices of Funding Opportunities (NOFOs) and expedite the release of all congressionally appropriated funds for the Family Violence Prevention and Services Act (FVPSA) and the Office on Violence Against Women (OVW).

While Veronica may have been surprised by her nomination, nobody else in the room was.

Last week, we had the pleasure of officially awarding Veronica Holguin with the NSVRC Visionary Voice Award. Current and former SAFE Center staff, Safe Bars and other community partners, Nebraska Coalition staff, and Veronica’s friends and family gathered in Kearney to celebrate her and her accomplishments. Thank you to everyone who joined us!

And most importantly, thank you to Veronica for your commitment to building a future where all Nebraskans are safe and thriving!
