Earlier this week, several Lima firefighters were recognized at the St. Rita’s Medical Center EMS Banquet for their exceptional prehospital care. Crews received awards for both prehospital trauma care and prehospital cardiac care.

Crews were recognized for the cardiac care award following a call on 2-28-26. Responders arrived to find a male patient in cardiac arrest and were able to successfully resuscitate him prior to arrival at the hospital. The patient was alert and talking upon arrival and went on to make a full recovery.

Crews recognized for this call included:
Medic 1: Jacob Shivley & Justin Orphal
Rescue 2: Matthew Baker & Lt. Jeremy Miller
Engine 2: Capt. Derek Newland, Miles Conrad & Rich Deubler

The second award recognized crews for outstanding prehospital trauma care during a multi-vehicle crash on I-75 on 2-28-26. Crews responded alongside multiple agencies, assisted with the extrication of a patient, and transported the patient to the hospital with multiple life-threatening injuries.

Crews recognized for this call included:
Medic 1: Jacob Shivley & Justin Orphal
Medic 2: Craig Recker, Grant Schroeder & Abdul Ahmed
Medic 4: Lt. Jeremy Miller & Matthew Baker

We would like to thank St. Rita’s Medical Center for the recognition and commend all of the crews involved for providing exceptional care and professionalism during these incidents.

Public Safety Announcement: Slow Down & Move Over
Last night, one of our fire engines was struck by a semi on I‑75 while crews were operating at an emergency scene. Thankfully, no firefighters were injured — but this incident is a serious reminder of how dangerous highway responses can be.
When you see emergency lights:
• Slow Down
• Move Over into the next lane if possible
• Give responders space to work safely
These steps aren’t just courteous — they are Ohio law and they save lives. Every day, firefighters, medics, police officers, tow operators, and highway workers stand just feet away from fast‑moving traffic while helping others.
Your cooperation helps ensure we all make it home safely.
Thank you for doing your part to protect those who protect you.
