Though not an officially recognized holiday, we feel it’s important to recognize and celebrate National Grandparents Day. Older adults contribute wisdom and knowledge to our communities and set an example for subsequent generations to follow.

The official flower of National Grandparents Day is the forget-me-not, representing love and remembrance. Its beauty and symbolism are reminders to all of us that our grandparents are a blessing to be cherished.

In August 1988, President Ronald Reagan signed Proclamation 5847, which declared August 21 as a day to recognize and celebrate the lifelong achievements and contributions of older adults. National Senior Citizens Day was first officially celebrated in 1991.

Today, we honor all the seniors in our community and beyond—those who continue to contribute their wisdom, knowledge, and friendship in so many ways. We appreciate you more than we can ever say.

During National Wellness Month, our community at The Villas of Lilydale has some tips for incorporating healthy habits to improve overall wellness.

✅ Drink more water. Aim for at least 64 ounces each day.
✅ Monitor sleeping habits to encourage more shuteye. Try to get 7–9 hours of sleep each night.
✅ Add more fresh fruits and vegetables to your diet. Set a goal of 5 servings per day.
✅ Increase physical activity. Try 30 minutes of moderate exercise 5 days each week.

The dog days of summer can be downright unbearable. But we want to share some tips for staying cool in the summer heat, especially if you are spending time outdoors.

Inside, keep blinds closed during the day and avoid using your oven if you are able.

Outside, limit activities to early morning or late evening, wear lightweight clothing, and seek shade when you can.

As always, drink plenty of water and enjoy snacks like watermelon, cucumbers, and citrus fruits, which have high water content to help you stay hydrated.
