Friends of the Children's Justice Center of Kauai Making a positive difference for Kauai's abused and neglected children through awareness, advocacy, assistance and support of the Children's Justice Center

The Friends of the Children's Justice Center of Kauai is a private not-for-profit organization dedicated to the well-being of children and youth who were physically or sexually abused, or who may have been severely neglected. Created in 1991 as a support for the work of the Children's Justice Center of Kauai, the Friends helps children who have been abused and also acts to help prevent abuse of ot

her children in the community. Children who have been traumatized often need help and support to heal and grow into healthy, active youth people who are able to participate fully in age appropriate activities with their families, friends, schools, and communities. The Friends provides "enhancements" to help them heal.

On Thursday April 10th, 2025 supporters and advocates of Kauai’s keiki, ohana, and communities gathered to witness and hear Derek S.K. Kawasaki our Mayor, County of Kauai proclaim April 2025 as National Alcohol Awareness Month, National Child Abuse Prevention & Sexual Assault Awareness Month. The Mayor called upon all Kauai citizens to join him in supporting the importance of learning about the behavioral and physical signs of alcohol addiction, child abuse and neglect, and sexual assault, and in working to reduce the incidents of these public health crises from happening to our island ‘ohana.

We, the Friends of the Children’s Justice Center of Kauai, are truly grateful for Mayor Kawakami’s steadfast support over the years for these important causes and also the agencies and professionals in the trenches fighting these battles, especially for our keiki and youth.

❤️❤️❤️

Have you been noticing any pinwheels popping up around our island this month?

April is National Child Abuse Prevention Month, the time every year where we raise awareness about preventing child abuse and neglect. One of the simple ways we and other partners do this is by planting fields of pinwheels around the island during the month of April. When you see one of these pinwheels, then remember we can all do our part to prevent and stamp out child abuse on Kauai.

The Friends of the Children’s Justice Center of Kauai was the recipient of a generous donation from the event organizers of the recently held 4th Annual Foilers of Aloha Kauai 2024. 🎉Mahalo , Jason , Tracy, Pono and the whole ohana! 🙏. Donations collected at their event included school supplies, blankets, backpacks, and stuffed plush animals, toiletries, and a generous assortment of gift cards we can share with the keiki of Kauai. 💜 This wonderful ohana selects a Kauai charity every year to support as part of their commitment to giving back to Kauai. 🤝 The exciting event was recently held over this past Thanksgiving weekend in the waters and surf 🌊 of Kalapaki Bay. Foiling enthusiasts and watersports lovers were able to see the top foilers from around the state and beyond showcase this new and exciting sport that is taking off all around the world. The aloha spirit was evident in the donated items they collected for our organization sand also in the beach clean up they facilitated before the event. 👏👏 We’ve included some pictures from the event to share what these waterman are doing!

In late October the Friends of the Children’s Justice Center of Kauai helped support an important training event for several different agencies and individuals that comprise the multidisciplinary team (MDT) that is meant to protect Kauai’s keiki. Through the sponsorship of the Hawaii State Chapter of Children’s Justice Center , Brad Russ Executive Director of the National Criminal Justice Training Center was able to lead an informative and powerful Sexual Abuse Round Table for Kauai that included case scenarios, anonymous surveys, and multi agency collaboration. Participants identified strengths, challenges, and next steps. In addition to the above, other partners and participants included the Kauai Children’s Justice Center, Kauai Police Department - Investigative Services Bureau, Child Welfare Services, County of Kauai Office of the Prosecuting Attorney, the YWCA, and SAFE/SANE. Special thanks especially to Karla Huerta and Maria McNeil for their planning and hands on coordination of this successful event.

Did you know..

As we are in the midst of Hawaii’a hottest summer months, it’s important to remember the dangers of leaving children in hot cars.

Children’s bodies heat up much faster than adults’ do, according to the nonprofit National Safety Council.

Children’s internal organs begin to shut down once their core body temperature reaches 104 degrees, and it takes very little time for a car to get too hot for children.

On an 86-degree day, for example, it would take only about 10 minutes for the inside of a car to reach a dangerous 105 degrees.

Here are some helpful recommendations to look out for our most vulnerable and protect Kauai’s keiki:

💙 Always keep cars locked even if you don’t have children.

💙 Always keep keys out of children’s reach.

💙 Place an item you can’t start the day without in the back seat.

💙 If a child goes missing, check the inside and trunk of all cars in the area immediately.

💙 Teach children to honk the horn if they get stuck.

💙 If you spot a child or pet alone inside a car, then do something right away. If they are in distress or danger, then you need to get them out immediately and begin to cool them.

🙏🙏🙏
