On May 13, 2026, the Council of the County of Kaua‘i presented a Certificate to the KAPA‘A MIDDLE SCHOOL CHOIR AND UKULELE BAND 2026 WORLDSTRIDES MUSIC FESTIVAL GOLD AWARD WINNERS

The Council of the County of Kaua‘i congratulates Mary Lardizabal, Director; Loke Sasil and Michael Koerte, Co-Directors of the Ukulele Band; and the students of the Kapa‘a Middle School (KMS) Choir and Ukulele Band for winning two Gold Awards at the 2026 WorldStrides On Stage Heritage Music Festival in Anaheim, California.

This year, the KMS students traveled to Anaheim, California, to perform on March 14, 2026. The 25 students who participated, under the direction of Mary Lardizabal, co-directed by Loke Sasil and Michael Koerte were among 40 choir and instrumental groups that competed at the national level. The songs selected for this national competition were based on the ability to represent Kaua‘i and our culture. The variety of songs held special meaning for both the Choir and Ukulele Band.

Special mahalo to the KMS Choir Booster’s Club, its board members, chaperones, Loke Sasil and Michael Koerte for the success in providing the support for this educational experience for the students. In addition, the KMS Choir Booster’s Club is very appreciative to the community supporters and sponsors who embrace the opportunity to watch the program flourish.

The Kaua‘i County Council extends its warm congratulations to the Kapa‘a Middle School Choir and Ukulele Band for their tremendous effort, dedication, and commitment shown in representing Kaua‘i.
