This week, the Rotary Club of Kaua'i is proud to be hosting Denise Marchacos.

"Malama Waters" is a visionary nonprofit initiative aimed at making a significant positive impact on both the environment and local communities, specifically on the beautiful island of Kauai. At its core, Malama Waters seeks to address the pressing issue of plastic pollution and promote sustainable practices by installing refillable water stations at public beaches across Kauai.

The name "Malama Waters" encapsulates the idea of caring for and preserving the island's precious natural resources, particularly its pristine waters. By providing convenient access to clean and safe drinking water through strategically placed refillable water stations, the initiative aims to reduce the usage of single-use plastic bottles, which are a major contributor to environmental degradation.

Malama Waters isn't just about reducing plastic waste; it's also about fostering a sense of responsibility and stewardship within the local community and among visitors. Through education, engagement, and collaboration, Malama Waters encourages individuals to make more sustainable choices while enjoying the island's stunning beaches.

By implementing this initiative, Malama Waters envisions a future where Kauai's public beaches remain clean and vibrant, devoid of plastic waste, and where people can quench their thirst without contributing to harmful pollution. The initiative's impact extends beyond cleaner shores – it's about creating a lasting change in behavior and attitudes towards the environment, setting an inspiring example for other communities to follow.

Malama Waters has a goal to install 20 refillable water stations in 2024 at a cost of $5-8000 each. Your tax deductible donation goes directly to implementing this goal and reducing plastic bottle waste by up to 10,000 bottles per month.

Denise Marchacos is a wife and mother of 2 beautiful daughters and a passionate protector and lover of our clean waters on this beautiful island of Kauai. Denise envisions a beautiful future for her daughters here on kauai and all residents and visitors can enjoy purified, fresh delicious water at all public areas including beaches, parks, trails, and more.

Denise's journey towards founding Malama Waters was inspired by a simple observation. The need for change. Witnessing the environmental impact of single-use plastic bottles on her beloved island, she was driven to take action. Her belief that water should be both safe and accessible to all ignited the idea of refillable water stations at Kauai's public beaches.

Denise invites you to join her and the Malama Waters team. Together we can turn the tide on plastic pollution. We can care for our planet, and ensure that safe, delicious water is not a luxury, but a right for everyone.

To help start your Monday and week off right, a great quote from the great Albert Einstein, “A person who never made a mistake never tried anything new.”

How did your mistake change your life? Change your mood? What did you learn?

We can't read a person's mind and we don't know what stressors they may be experiencing. Instead, I challenge us all to be curious, not judgmental this week and see if we can't help make a positive impact in a strangers, family members, or friends life.

Have a great week everyone!!

Today has been a tragic day for the families, friends, loved ones, and Rotarians on the island of Maui. As people of action, Rotary District 5000 - Hawaii, USA has started started a relief fund to help those in need on Maui. Every bit of assistance is doing something great. Our thoughts and prayers go out to those that have been impacted by these fires. Our thoughts also go out to our first responders, firefighters, and for those that are putting themselves in harms way to make a difference.
